October ‘02 employment growth up from past Eighteen of Oregon’s 31 labor market areas had job declines in October, 2002, the same number as October ’01 and similar to Octobers in the prior several years. Employment growth last month was substantially stronger than in recent Octo- bers, probably due mostly to warm, sunny weather, said Oregon Employment Dept. (OED). Curry County shed 110 jobs overall in October, com- prising gains in public educa- tion and declines in most other non-manufacturing industries. The county’s employment level has been largely un- changed over the past four years. Coos County added 110 jobs last month, with public education gaining 220 and most other industries losing jobs. Coos is below the year- ago level by 210 jobs –mostly in public education– but shows some gains in construc- tion and mining and services. Douglas County gained 230 jobs in October – a larger gain for the month than in any year since 1996. It has turned an over-the-year deficit of 850 in January into an over-the- year gain of 570 in October. Industries showing strength over the year included lumber and wood products (up 190 jobs) and health services (up 120 jobs). Josephine County’s em- ployment rose by 140 in Octo- ber due to gains in public edu- cation (+330 jobs) and losses in many non-manufacturing industries. Over-the-year job increases in manufacturing and non-manufacturing pushed the county above the year-ago figure, but it remains below the October 200 level. Jackson County added 1,470 jobs to its total non- farm payroll employment, mostly in public education and retail trade. The county re- mains below its October levels of the past two years. *Confidential business consultation-free of charge *Now offering counseling in Illinois Valley *Affordable business-related training *Comprehensive business library 214 SW 4th Street, Grants Pass - 1-800-411-6508 Ext. 7494 Phone today - let us help you succeed http://www.roguecc.edu/sbdc RAMCELL NOW AVAILABLE AT DARN NEAR EVERYTHING 136 South Redwood Hwy. 592-5255 Current Ramcell customers FREE upgrades, phones & promos!
