The December theme,
“God Became Man” began
with John 1:1-14, “The Word
became flesh and made His
dwelling among us” (v.14).
Jesus is the Word (logos)
John wrote. The Greeks used
logos to refer to the spoken
word and the idea behind it;
they also believed a rational
principle (logos) governed
everything. For Jesus, logos
referred to God. Jesus mani-
fested all the concepts and
more for John. He is the per-
fect revealer of God: the
“Light of the world” (John
8:12); “the way, the truth, and
the life (John 14:6).
John 1:18 sums it up this
way: “No one has ever seen
God, but God the one and
only who is at the Father’s
side, has made Him known.”

As Advent begins, our
readings are a reminder to stay
focused. Mark’s Gospel offers
words of hope that God will
intervene to save His people.
Mark’s Jewish-Christian
community was being forced
out of the synagogues by fel-
low Jews, and they were fac-
ing Rome, which invariably
brought persecution. The peo-
ple were scared, finding it dif-
ficult to stay faithful.
We could be thinking
similar thoughts as we face
the threats of terrorism and
crime, but rarely experience
genuine fear.
Christians should relate to
the words of warning in
Mark’s Gospel. “Be watchful!
be alert! ... you do not know
when the Lord of the house is
coming ...”
Christmas reminds us that
Jesus came once. Advent is a
reminder to stay focused, as
He will come again.
Seventh-day Adventist
Thanksgiving weekend
celebrations for the church
began with a vesper service
Friday evening. The audience
included several visitors, here
to be with families.
Dawn and Kaye Varney,
and Meghan Gainer led sing-
ing songs and choruses. Dawn
led us to contemplate the Sa-
maritan leper, who alone out
of the 10 that were miracu-
lously healed by Jesus, re-
turned to say, “Thank You” to
the Lord (Luke 17:11-17).
Sabbath morning worship
service followed the same
theme. The scripture reading
consisted of 14 of the 33 refer-
ences in the Psalms to
Thanksgiving.
Pastor Harold Premdas led
the congregation in making
written lists of special per-
sonal items for which they
wanted to thank God.

On Nov. 22, Dr. Don
Blackburn took us back to the
days of the Pilgrims, saying
that God led them to a new
Eden to worship His good-
ness.
Although fear and dis-
couragement were a great part
of their lives, they trusted that
God would keep them safe.
He sent the Indian Squanto to
teach them how to survive.
On Dec. 1, continuing
Gen. 4, God came to Cain af-
ter Abel’s murder and Cain
said, “Am I my brother’s
keeper?”
God gave him every
chance to repent before He
cast him out of Eden. I John
tells us that if we confess our

Waiters. What kind of
waiters are we?
This isn’t about those
waiting on tables. It’s about
patience. Are we waiters who
arrive early and then fret
while waiting? Are we late or
just barely on time, making
people wait?
Or do we show up on
time, keeps busy while wait-
ing and are prepared when the
waiting is over?
In this time of Advent, we
are all waiting for Christmas,
the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
We also wait for His return in
glory to judge the living and
dead. How we wait for Christ-
mas and the return of Jesus is
a good measure of character.
Immanuel United Methodist
Pastor David Goodrich’s
sermon was from Mark 13:24-
37, “Beware, Keep Alert.”
The term apocalyptic is de-
rived from the Greek word
apokalupsis, which means
disclosure or revelation.
Jesus was an apocalyptic
prophet in speaking words of
judgment and referring to His
relationship with God in
Heaven and to the coming
Kingdom of God. Jesus pre-
dicted the fall of Jerusalem
and the chaos of the genera-
tion of His own disciples.
When we understand the
resurrection to be the begin-
ning of the end, we can live
comfortably with the delay,
which accomplishes the open-
ing of space to proclaim the
Gospel.
Only God know the day or
the hour.
The measure of a man
is the way he bears up
under misfortune.
