Lee Harman became the
new commander of the Jo-
sephine County Sheriff’s
Office Illinois Valley Substa-
tion in Cave Junction on
Monday, Nov. 4. He is avail-
able weekdays during regu-
lar business hours at 592-
2126. It is Sheriff Dave
Daniel’s intent to furnish the
same level of service to the
valley that is available to the
rest of the county.
CARNIVAL FUN - Among Halloween events on Thursday,
Oct. 31 were (top photo) a carnival with many activities at
Evergreen Elementary School, including booth for knocking
the straw hat off a scarecrow; and a Harvest Festival at Com-
munity Bible Church, with attractions including a gold-
panning booth.
Health alert on meth mess
A health alert regarding
severe illnesses that appear to
be associated with metham-
phetamine use has been issued
by the Josephine County Dept.
of Health and Community
Action, and the Josephine
County Sheriff’s Office.
Near the end of October,
the health department and
Grants Pass Public Safety re-
ceived reports of four ill indi-
viduals who received treat-
ment at Three Rivers Commu-
nity Hospital in Grants Pass
after using methamphetamine.
Three of the people were
extremely ill and were admit-
ted to the intensive-care unit.
In addition, a Jackson County
resident experienced similar
symptoms two weeks ago.
Unique to these illnesses is the
development of low blood
pressure and pneumonia.
An apology is the
superglue of life.
It can repair
just about anything.
Individuals should seek
immediate medical attention if
they experience chills, fever,
clammy skin, nausea and
vomiting, seizure-like tremors,
confusion or loss of con-
sciousness after the use of
drugs, such as methampheta-
mine, officials said.
The health department and
sheriff’s office are strongly
encouraging individuals to
become drug free, and not risk
their lives by using illegal
substances.

Monday, Oct. 21
*A woman phoned the
I.V. Family Resource Center
and stated that she had been
held against her will for the
past several years. It was
found that she had a history of
mental illness.
*Following a suspicious
vehicle report on Ollis Road,
it was found to be on private
property, and the complainant
was advised of options.
*A woman reported addi-
tional items as being stolen
from her pump house in the
20000 block of Redwood
Hwy. She recently reported
that a holding tank and water
pump had been stolen, but that
she had discovered that other
items also were missing.
*A two-car fender-bender
was reported on the Shop
Smart parking lot. The drivers
exchanged information.
*Kimberly J. Cook, 36,
was cited on a charge of third-
degree theft (“shoplifting” at
Shop Smart.
*Assault was reported at
Madrone Motel in the 32000
block of Redwood Hwy. at
6:05 p.m. The complainant
stated that he was walking to a
store when a man hit his head.
It was found that the assailant
had a history of mental illness.
*Gunshots were reported
in the 9600 block of Takilma
Road at 5:27 p.m. A woman
said that a man had been
shooting for the last 30 min-
utes and wanted to make sure
that he was doing so safely.
*Because of a man run-
ning off when hailed, a wel-
fare check was requested in
the 1200 block of Happy
Camp Road at 7:28 p.m.
When officers arrived they
were unable to locate the man.
*A man reported a vehicle
swerving erratically all over
the road in the Selma area at
7:52 p.m.
*A boy, 11, was cited and
released to his mother on a
charge of third-degree theft at
Shop Smart at 8:11 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 22
*Public assistance was
sought at 10:54 a.m. in the
1500 block of Crooks Creek
because a runaway teen-age
daughter was riding around
with another teen-ager, who
was driving erratically.
*Brandy A. Gallegos, 32,
was cited on charges of driv-
ing while suspended (DWS)
and no insurance in the 33000
block of Redwood Hwy. at
2:23 p.m.
*Harassment was reported
in the 1000 block of Deer
Creek Road at 2:25 p.m. It
was said that weapons were in
the home, but the only weapon

at Shop Smart at 4:54 p.m.,
and a boy was cited on a
charge of third-degree theft
and released to his parents.
*At 5:41 p.m. in the 300
block of W. Stevenson Street
a girl, 10, claimed that her
grandma punched her in the
side of the head. It was found
that abuse had not occurred
and that a physical altercation
had occurred during an emo-
tional outburst by the girl.
*At 6:21 p.m. Gary Lane
Sauer Jr., 25, was cited on the
parking lot of CJ Select Mar-
ket on charges of DWS and
failure to carry insurance.
*A woman reported that
something, maybe a bear, was
pounding on the side of her
house in the 23000 block of
Redwood Hwy.
*Report of a missing wal-
let was made in the 5000
block of Caves Hwy at 7:58
p.m. The complainant said
that a friend of her child drove
off with the wallet in his vehi-
cle. The wallet was returned
with everything intact except
for the cash.
*At 8:23 p.m. after what
appeared to be a physical al-
tercation in the Lakeshore
Drive/McMullen Creek Road
area, Eugene Francis Griffin
III was arrested on a charge of
fourth-degree assault and
taken to county jail.
Thursday, Oct. 24
*Extra patrol was re-
quested at I.V. High School.
*A counselor at IVHS
was concerned about a student
who had reported being sexu-
ally abused.
*A report of a minor in
possession (MIP) of alcohol at
the IVHS Homecoming Dance
was being looked into.
*Goats were said to be on
the road in the Redwood
Hwy./Arrowhead Drive area
at 10:04 a.m.
*A motor vehicle accident
involving a pickup truck and
two cars was reported in the
Redwood Hwy./Kerby
Mainline Road area at 1:14
p.m. An unidentified victim
was taken to Three Rivers
Community Hospital in
Grants Pass.
*A man said that people
who had rear-ended him in
January were following him
around, trying to hit him
again.

area at 3:24 p.m.
*A man complained that
he was “let go” from a wreck-
ing yard business and that he
had two vehicles at the busi-
ness that he wanted to re-
trieve, but that the owner of
the business wouldn’t allow it.
*Omer Z. Erden, 43, was
cited on a charge of speeding
at 3:50 p.m. in the Redwood
Hwy/Burch Drive area.
*Public assistance was
rendered at a wrecking yard
during a vehicle recovery at
4:35 p.m.
*At 3:31 p.m. a woman
complained about squatters
living in a travel trailer on her
property on Upper Deer Creek
Road. It was said that no
travel trailer was located, just
several outbuildings, and that
it appeared no one was living
in them.
*What appeared to be
phone lines were reported
down in the 5000 block of
Takilma Road at 5:13 p.m.
Authorities were contacted.
*At 5:11 p.m. in the
18000 block of Redwood
Hwy., a woman reported that
she had been harassed by a
former tenant she had evicted.
She requested that an officer
contact her either at her resi-
dence or by phone.
*Someone said that a man
and a woman on an off-road
quad was riding on the high-
way in a fast manner. The
complainant asked that they
be notified about their driving.
*At 7:55 p.m. Anthony S.
Crawford, 30, was cited on a
charge of driving 65 mph in a
45 zone in the Redwood Hwy/
Pugetville Road area.
*At 8:20 p.m. on Old
Stage Road a woman reported
that when she arrived home
she found her ex-boyfriend’s
friend inside her residence.
The complainant was con-
cerned because the man had
been served with a restraining
order the day before.
*Public assistance was
requested by a man who lives
in Massachusetts regarding
contacting his sister in I.V.
Wednesday, Oct. 23
There was not a dead cow
in the road in the 5000 block
of Holland Loop
*Jonathan M. Jessup, 23,
was cited on a charge of third-
degree theft in Shop Smart.
*A 15-year-old girl was
cited on charges of no opera-
tor’s permit and careless driv-
ing at 3:17 p.m. after the car
she was driving struck the
First Christian Fellowship
building behind CJ Select
Market.
*Shoplifting was reported
