Public health of- ficials recommend that persons at a higher risk of compli- cations from influ- enza be vaccinated during October and November. They identified higher-rise persons as: *All persons 65 years of age and older; residents of nursing homes or chronic care facili- ties; persons 6 months and older who have chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, re- nal disease and im- mune deficiencies; children younger than 19 years old who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy; and women who will be in the second or third trimester of preg- nancy during flu sea- son. *Healthy chil- dren 6 to 23 months, whenever feasible, based on recommen- dations of the Advi- sory Committee on Immunization Prac- tices (ACIP), a panel of medical experts that reviews immuni- zation practices and recommend improve- ments in national im- munization efforts. *All persons who live, work or provide care to high-risk per- sons listed above. This includes house- hold members, health-care workers and employees of nursing homes and care facilities; pro- viders of home-care and day-care for young children. Par- ents and caregivers of infants up to 6 months are especially encouraged to get a flu shot. Influenza is char- acterized by abrupt onset of fever, head- ache, sore throat, cough and muscle aches. Unlike other common respiratory illnesses, the flu “is associated with a striking sense of un- wellness accompa- nied with a loss of appetite and weak- ness lasting several days.” For information about flu shot clinics phone (800) SAFENET.
