Arts Council
hears plans
for CJ work,
renovation
Al Devine, of Evergreen
Federal Bank, discussed Cave
Junction renovation during a
recent meeting of Illinois
River Valley Arts Council.
He provided an update on
efforts to bring a bronze cast-
ing foundry to the valley. He
is negotiating with someone
who is outgrowing their foun-
dry elsewhere.
Devine said that Ever-
green Bank has agreed to con-
struct a namesake water/sign
public art piece which will
include two bronze bears. He
passed around color copies of
the artist’s renderings. He also
showed renderings of a 3-foot
salmon sculpture that will be
installed near the footbridge in
Grants Pass.
Discussions ensued re-
garding the placement of art in
locations throughout Cave
Junction. Devine also spoke
on the subject of “façade de-
velopment” in Cave Junction
to give it a uniform look using
natural poles and local rocks
creating a thematic approach
to tourism similar to Jackson
Hole, Wyo., and Leaven-
worth, Wash.
Mary Reynolds spoke
about the possibility of a new
fire station at the former
Wish-U-Well Motel location
on Caves Hwy., and that there
will be a tourism grant
matched by businesses to erect
a monument to firefighters.
She also said that designs
are welcome from anyone for
suggestions for rock sculpture
bus stop benches to be pre-
sented to the city of Cave
Junction. She said that she and
others are in the process of
applying with I.V. Commu-
nity Response Team for a
$7,000 “Art Builds Commu-
nity” grant from the Oregon
Arts Commission to establish
a mural on the diamond-
shaped brick wall of the new
Taylor’s Sausage building.
Patricia Downing spoke of
her work with I.V. Safe House
Alliance. She said that a
poster will be made by Alan
Laurie to help in the alliance’s
efforts. She reminded the
group about the I.V. Learning
Fair held by RCC in the
county building in Cave Junc-
tion on Friday, Sept. 13.
Rebecca Pearson, of
“Bebe’s ART for everyone,”
informed the group that Mi-
chael Yanase, of Yanase’s
Jewelers in Kerby, is putting
together an “Arts Calendar”
for 2003 and to contact him if
anyone wishes to submit art
for the project.
IRVAC meets on last
Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the
coalition building on E. River
Street, west of I.V. High
School. The public can attend.

Plans were made by the
arts council during its August
meeting for designing, build-
ing and decorating a float to
be entered in this year’s I.V.
Lions Labor Day Parade.
The float was described as
having four people aboard,
painting at large easels, while
others in costume walked
alongside with “art on sticks,”
offering them to anyone in the
crowd having an “art attack.”
Members at the meeting
took home various items for
decorating. The parade re-
sulted in the Illinois River Art
Council receiving third prize
in “special non-category.” The
Arts Council said that it ap-
preciates I.V. Lions Club for
its efforts.
Keep it clean.
Please don’t litter!
