Q: “How are Hospices
funded?”
A: Most not-for-profit hospices
receive their funds from billing
Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans’
Administration, or private insur-
ance companies for the care
they provide. They also receive
community donated funds. Re-
gardless how expensive the care
is, the hospice receives a set
per-visit or per-day amount.
Sometimes the person doesn’t
learn about hospice until the
day, week, or month before their
death. The community donations
fill the gaps between the ex-
pense for short term cases and
the reimbursement provided.
When a hospice chooses to ex-
pand their services or build a
new building as Lovejoy Hospice
has, they must look to other
sources such as grants, banks,
or community sponsors for fund-
ing of the project.
