Mannix, OSEA linked
Gubernatorial
candidate
Kevin
Mannix has signed
the Oregon School
Employees Associa-
tion’s (OSEA) pledge
requiring the Legisla-
ture to solve Ore-
gon’s
long-term
school funding prob-
lem during the 2003
legislative session.
Mannix is the
only gubernatorial
candidate to sign the
pledge, according to
an announcement.
His Democratic op-
ponent Ted Kulon-
goski, did not re-
spond to OSEA’s
request, it added.
Steven Araujo,
OSEA executive di-
rector, said that Man-
nix committed to use
“all the means at my
disposal as governor
to support and lead
the Legislature in its
effort to solve the
lack of long-term,
sustainable funding
for Oregon’s public
schools during the
2003 regular legisla-
tive session.”
“We can solve
our school funding
crisis without raising
personal income or
business taxes,” Man-
nix said. “My ad-
ministration
will
work to create more
jobs, thereby increas-
ing income for
schools. And I will
work on PERS
(Public Employees
Retirement System)
reform, which has
short- and long-term
effects on our chil-
dren’s education.”
“Kevin’s com-
mitment to solving
the long-term school
funding is a major
sep forward for Ore-
gon’s schools and our
children’s future,”
said Araujo.
“By signing the
pledge, he is demon-
strating the kind of
leadership and con-
viction it will take to
ensure that our public
schools help our chil-
dren grow and excel.
In this political cli-
mate, it’s refreshing
to find such a high-
profile
candidate
willing to tackle this
challenge head on.”
OSEA represents
nearly 20,000 school
secretaries, custodi-
ans, educational as-
sistants, bus drivers
and other educa-
tional-support profes-
sionals throughout
Oregon.
