Old Stage Road Sabbath School . . . . . 9:30 a.m. Valley Evangelical Free September’s theme, “To Believe,” began with John 6:26-40, where Jesus was asked, “What must we do to do the works of God?” He replied, “To believe in the one He has sent.” Jesus’ questioners thought that, if He were the Messiah, He would cause manna to come down, as Moses had fed the nation for 40 years with God’s manna. They were ask- ing for a miracle, such as the one Moses performed, even though Jesus had just fed 5,000 miraculously. Jesus corrected their mate- rialistic thinking: “I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” Jesus, the bread from Heaven, provides spiritual nourishment. St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church The prophet Jeremiah did not have an easy life. His mes- sage was not well received, and he knew tremendous suf- fering as a consequence. He complained to the Lord about it, but felt compelled to con- tinue preaching God’s word. If we choose God, our lives won’t be easy either. We will have to make sacrifices. We must become people of the scripture and take seri- ously what it teaches us about God’s way in the world. As Jeremiah, despite ridi- cule that Christian living can bring, we must make personal sacrifices for the sake of God. The disciples did not want to hear of Jesus suffering and death. The most vocal, Peter, said, “God forbid it Lord.” Jesus replied, “Get behind me Satan.” Satan’s whole aim is to get self-interest to be the chief end of man. Greed in all forms is contrary to what Je- sus lived and taught. Peter wanted Jesus to continue with him. Jesus wanted Peter to fol- low behind not self-interest, not thinking blindly of himself but being aware and willing to act to alleviate pain for others. Seventh-day Adventist “If My People Pray” was the sermon topic presented by visiting pastor, Tim Zoll- brecht, of Grants Pass. His purpose was to strengthen the belief that prayer is an impor- tant component of the life of a Christian. The scripture text from II Chronicles 7:14 relates part of the vision Solomon received in response to the impressive prayer he had offered earlier at the dedication of the tem- ple. The Lord assured Solo- mon of the conditions under which He would forgive sin and heal the land. The people must realize that they are called by His name. They must humble themselves in surrender to Him. Prayer must be an inte- gral part of their lives, and they must seek God’s face for the purpose of directing their lives in harmony with His will. God’s promise that He will hear these prayers and forgive the sins committed by the people, and He will heal their land is good today just as it was in Solomon’s time. Community Bible The Praise Team opened with, “There is Joy in The Lord.” Dr. Don Blackburn con- tinued in Genesis, “The His- tory of Creation.” On the third day God created the land and the seas. The Earth was cre- ated matured, so that the herbs and fruit trees would yield from the beginning. The lakes and streams were created to water the land, and God saw that it was good. The fourth day, God said, “Let there be light to divide the day from the night and to show the days, seasons and years. I Corinthians 15:35 tells the of the glory of the sun, moon and stars. The first man of the Earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from Heaven. Communion was cele- brated and the closing hymn was, “Go Out With Joy.” Good Shepherd Lutheran Is seeing believing or be- lieving being able to see? Sun- day we learned that Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, couldn’t bear the thought of Jesus not being present in person. But Jesus scolded him, reminding him that his focus should be on divine, not personal love. Is the same true in our lives? Do we focus on the things of this world such as family and family values, rather than serving God first? Is Christianity too easy these days -- something we can practice at our convenience? The church is growing in Africa and South America despite restrictions and perse- cution: Yet in this country and Western Europe it is declin- ing. Perhaps we need to re- member that we will be judged not for what we have done for ourselves, but what we have done for others. This focus is what Jesus was trying to impress on Peter, and us.
