Substance abuse traffic
accident fatalities down
Although each traffic fa-
tality is a tragedy, there is
some good news to report in
terms of the big picture in
Oregon.
The just-released traffic
death toll for January through
July 2002 indicates that the
state’s roadways are once
again becoming safer for mo-
torists.
“We have put the post-
September fatality spike be-
hind us,” said Troy E.
Costales, manager of the Ore-
gon Dept. of Transportation
(ODOT) Transport ation
Safety Division.
“From September through
early 2002, we saw an in-
crease in substance abuse and
driver distraction that led to a
big increase in traffic fatali-
ties,” he said. “Data from the
first seven months of this year
indicates that we have re-
turned to our record-low fatal-
ity rate of the past three
years.”
From Jan. 1 through July
31 there was a preliminary
total of 254 fatalities on Ore-
gon roadways, vs. 258 fatali-
ties for the same period in
2001. By the end of 2001, a
total of 488 people had lost
their lives in traffic crashes,
capping the first three-year
period with under 500 fatali-
ties since the early 1960s.
“Anything can happen,
but based on historical data
for the remaining months of
the year, I would project that
we will end this year at some-
where around 450 fatalities,”
Costales said. “If we end up
with fewer than 500 this year,
we will have completed the
best four-year run since 1959 -
1962 in terms of actual fatality
count.
“That is astounding when
you consider there are about
four times as many cars on the
road today as in 1962.”
ODOT urges caution be-
cause the end of summer is
one of the busiest travel
months as families scramble
to get vacations and other trips
in before the start of school.
The agency uses a regionally
based program to cooperate
with law enforcement and lo-
cal groups in educating and
informing the public about
traffic safety issues.
The top three killers on
the road are excessive speed,
failure to wear safety re-
straints, and driving while im-
paired by alcohol or other
drugs. Therefore, transporta-
tion officials urge all motorists
to obey the posted speed,
buckle up and avoid driving
after consuming alcohol or
other drugs.
