Biscuit Fire
officials list
closed sites
with plans
for rehab
By SHERRI HOPPER
Several residents of Illi-
nois Valley attended a
Thursday, Aug. 29 meeting
at Jubilee Park to discuss the
status of the Biscuit Fire.
One issue addressed by
fire officials during the
meeting was public access
to areas affected by the for-
est fire. Rob Shull, a U.S.
Forest Service supervisor,
explained that assessment of
the area for public safety
would first have to occur
before opening areas now
closed.
According to Shull,
opening Bear Camp Road,
which runs between Grants
Pass and the coast, is a pri-
ority. The forest service
hopes to eventually establish
overlooks on the road for
viewing the fire area.
As far as the interior of
the fire, roads will have to
be assessed for a number of
hazards, as well as making
sure public access does not
hamper rehabilitation ef-
forts.
Rehabilitation of areas
affected by suppression ac-
tivities and also of the
burned area, have now come
to the forefront with crews
working to rehabilitate the
containment lines.
Also a Burned Area
Emergency Rehabilitation
(BAER) team has begun
work on the analysis and
prescription for preparing
the area for winter rains.
Members of Mike Mor-
com’s Blue Mountain Inter-
agency team also attended
the meeting. Team members
explained the current situa-
tion. There are still interior
areas burning, but the only
active portion of the fire is
in the Pistol River area, they
said.
Smoke was another con-
cern to those in attendance.
It was explained that while
smoke levels will continue
to diminish, smoke may
continue to be an issue until
the fire is completely out --
an event that may not take
place until winter rains be-
gin.
Another question was
about missing hiker Michael
Woods. Pam Bode, Illinois
Valley-Galice District
ranger, said that the forest
service is working with Jo-
sephine County Emergency
Management to begin
searching for the missing
hiker. It has previously been
too smoky and dangerous to
begin to try to locate the
hiker, who left to hike
through the Kalmiopsis Wil-
derness just days previous to
the start of the fire.
