Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR 97523, September 4, 2002 Opportunities to aid pupils at Evergreen School listed According to Debbie Breckner, principal of Ever- green Elementary School, the school has been receiving phone calls from businesses and individuals regarding do- nation of school supplies for this school year. In the past the school has provided supplies to students for a small fee, but due to the budget situation for Oregon schools, Evergreen will be only able to provide paper and pencils. These supplies will be provided at no cost, but fami- lies will be responsible for items including crayons, glue, and backpacks. Breckner said that the school also serves approxi- mately 41 homeless students. The school provides a Family Advocacy program in the morning before school, pro- viding students opportunities to use school facilities for hy- giene needs. “While Evergreen sup- plies the very basic supplies to students, we do not have fund- ing available to purchase items like backpacks or gym shoes,” said Breckner. “We have students whose shoes are entirely too small, or whose shoes have holes in them and are falling apart. Several times throughout the year we provide shoes and clean socks to children who need them. Clothing items are always a need. Breckner provided a list of items that would be helpful to the school and the students it serves: *Backpacks in good con- dition. *Clothing. *New underwear in vari- ous sizes. *Shoes in good condition and clean socks. *Crayons, glue, colored pencils. *Toothbrushes, tooth- paste. *Combs, ponytail holders, barrettes. *Lotion, hair gel. *Donations of money to purchase items for students who have unusual situations, such as alarm clocks to help them get to school on time. The school will provide a receipt for any donations, as they are tax-deductible, said Breckner.
