Deanna Lee (Downey) Howell – 1938-2020 Deanna Lee (Downey) Howell, 81, passed peacefully on April 27, 2020. She was born at Chemawa on Dec. 13, 1938, to Roy F. and Mae (Adams) Downey. Deanna married Walter D. Howell on Aug. 25, 1956, who preceded her in death in 1993. Deanna is survived by three daugh- ters, Judy (George) Muschamp of Siletz, Ore., Joyce (Kurk) Retherford of Siletz and Juanita (Craig) Roth of Chewelah, Wash.; and one son, Jerry (Kim) Howell of Siletz; 11 grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; siblings, Martha Lockhart, Jean Garrett, Blanch Downey-Tyler, Char- lotte Noble and Thomas Downey; and many nieces and nephews. Deanna was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Kenneth Black- eter, Roy Downey Jr, Melvin Downey, Genevive Adams-Gavin, Ila Hoiness, JoAnn Miller and Peter Downey. In life, Deanna enjoyed music, golf (having earned two ladies champion- ships), baseball (esp. Pete Rose), bingo and slots. Most of all, she loved her family. Tristen Reed Hays – 1999-2020 Tristen Reed Hays was born July 16, 1999, in La Mesa, Calif. On April 25, 2020, he was enjoying the day at Martinez Lake in Yuma, Ariz., when he was tragi- cally hit and killed by a boater. Tristen was raised in Lakeside, Calif., where he attended elementary school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, middle school at Lakeside Middle School and he graduated from El Capitan High School in 2018. Tristen lived his life to the fullest, bringing so much love, thrill and adven- ture to those around him. His smile was contagious and he would stop at nothing to make those around him laugh. Tristen was kind, generous and giving, always putting others before himself. He had an impact on so many people in his life as a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and best friend to all. Tristen will always be missed but never forgotten. Tristen is survived by his mother and stepfather, Kelly Hays-Duesler (Siletz) and Erik Duesler; father and stepmother, Christopher Hays and Shauna Zarick- Hays; sister, Preslee Hays; brother, Cash Hays; stepbrother and sister, Jake and Shea Sergent; grandparents, Alan and Dona Lou (Lane) James (Siletz), and Michael and Linda Zarick; grandmother, Carol Duesler; great-grandfathers, Alfred Lane Jr. (Siletz), Jim James and Clifford 4 • Siletz News • June 2020 Congratulations to Ryan Howell, Tribal Home Visiting graduate! Ride in peace, Tristen Reed. Ryan entered the program in Febru- ary 2017 and remained activity engaged in it until April 2020 when her daughter ZaDrea turned 3 years old. We are very proud of all the accom- plishments Ryan completed while par- ticipating in the program. One specific accomplishment was gaining employ- ment at our Tribal clinic.
