Elizabeth Jane John – 1946-2019
It is with deep sadness we announce
the passing of a great woman. Liz’s
courageous battle with cancer ended on
Oct. 25. She was in her home, surrounded
by her family.
Liz was born Oct. 23, 1946, to
Clark and Eva John in Toledo, Ore. She
lived in the area throughout her life and
Siletz is where she resided at the time of
her passing.
For 25 years Liz worked in the fish
processing industry on the Newport
bayfront. She had been retired for the
last 20 years.
Liz loved her family like no other, they
are her rocks. She cherished time spent
with her daughters, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
She loved spending her days beading,
gardening and going to elders activities. She

More than 30 board members, friends
and supporters gathered recently at the
future site of the Edmonds Waterfront
Center for a Native American purification
and blessing ceremony. Chief William
DePoe of the Confederated Tribes of
Siletz Indians conducted the ceremony.
“We wanted to pay tribute to the
Coast Salish people who have been stew-
ards of the region’s land and Salish Sea
for thousands of years,” said Senior Cen-
ter Executive Director Farrell Fleming.
“Sometimes we forget that Edmonds’ his-
tory did not start with George Brackett.”
also enjoyed her culture and participated in
all things that kept her traditions alive. She
was proud to be a Siletz Tribal member.
Liz had two very dear cousins/sisters,
Kristi Martin-Bayya and Bonnie Petersen.
Each one had a unique bond with Liz from
weekend getaways to date nights. The three
had many adventures throughout Liz’s life.
She is survived by her brothers, David
and Ron John, and sister, Josephine John;
her two daughters, Anna and Delina
(Shane); four grandchildren, Darian,
Daniel (Alondra), Zoey and Zaiden; two
great-grandchildren, Amelia and Rayne;
along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, Clark and Eva; her brothers, Jr.,
Johnnie, LeRoy and Lyndsey; and her
sister, Gylene.
A celebration of life was held Nov. 2 at
the Siletz Tribal Community Center, with
a potluck following.

president – introduced DePoe.
“I am so gratified that we are having
this ritual here, at this place and this time,”
said White, who is running for a seat on
the Edmonds City Council. “The new cen-
ter will be full of happy memoires, events
and celebrations, and this cleansing cer-
emony sets the stage for safety, good luck
and health for all that will happen here.”
Following the traditional smudg-
ing ritual involving the burning of sage,
DePoe looked to those gathered and said,
“We are all new again.”
He also spoke about how people are
interconnected with all things – the envi-
ronment, the past and the future.
The Edmonds Senior Center serves
about 4,000 seniors a year with a range of
programs and activities. During the year of
construction, programs are being provided
at 16 temporary locations throughout
Edmonds.
The new Edmonds Waterfront Center
will be built on the same site but will oper-
ate as a multi-generational activity center
and will serve a much larger demographic
in an expanded timeframe.
More than $13 million has been raised
toward the $16 million goal.

If you would like your candidate’s statement and photo to appear in the Voter’s
Pamphlet, please submit your statement and a recent 3x5 photograph of yourself
along with your application. Deadline for statements and photos is 4 p.m. on
Dec. 13, 2019.
Candidate statements must be no longer than 750 words and must not be
derogatory or contain personal attacks on any one individual. Statements and
photos will appear in the Voter’s Pamphlet. Photos will be included on the ballot.
