Strong receives
top culinary
award for all of
the Americas
Jack Strong was recently honored
with another culinary award, this time as
executive chef at the Renaissance Phoenix
Downtown Hotel in Phoenix, Ariz.
The email he received from Dana Pel-
licano, vice president of food and beverage
experience, The Americas for Mariott
International, explained the following:
“Congratulations!
It is our sincere pleasure to inform
you that you have been selected as Ameri-
cas 2018 Award of Culinary Excellence
Executive Chef of the Year Winner for the
Classic Distinctive Segment.
Near the beginning of summer,
the Viles/Service/Carson family held
a memorial service in Siletz for our
mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and
cousin. It was only with the help of
Siletz Tribal staff and volunteers that
we were able to accomplish this work.
Thank you, one and all, for the
work you did on our behalf before,
during and after the memorial service
for Mom on June 8, 2019.
We especially appreciate Raina
Johnston’s work. She came early and
stayed late in order to help our family
in our time of need.
Editor’s note: The obituary
for Ronald Bruce Butler Sr. in the
July issue of Siletz News contained
several errors.
Butler served in the military in
Japan, not in Vietnam as previously
stated. He did not work in the timber
industry. Ron Butler Jr.’s mother is
Daryllynne Carey, not Sharon Butler
as previously stated.

“I have been blessed with this honor
and to receive recognition in such a large
company full of talented executive chefs,”
said Strong. “Alas, I did not win the Global
award and a chef from Dubai took home
that honor, but to represent the Americas
and win for our continent is humbling.”

August 2019

Daniel Austin Schwalbe
University of Washington
I am proud to announce that my
son and Tribal member Daniel “Austin”
Schwalbe graduated from the University of
Washington on June 15 with a Bachelor of
Science degree in construction manage-
ment, with a minor in engineering.
Austin has worked very hard to
achieve his goals and is very apprecia-
tive of all of the support he has received
from our Siletz Tribe and for its help and
guidance with his financial assistance to
pursue his educational endeavors.
Austin took a few weeks to enjoy
the summer by traveling and sightseeing
before he started his new construction
management career with a fantastic job
opportunity working on the new Seattle
light rail extension starting July 15.
Congratulations, Austin! I am very
proud of you! I love you very much!

Savannah R. Worman
Oregon State University
Savannah R. Worman graduated from
Oregon State University on June 15 with
a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and a
minor in writing.
As Savannah’s family, we are extremely
proud of her dedication, determina-
tion and all her accomplishments while
attending college. She is the first college
graduate in our family. Savannah’s plan is
to become a writer and she is working on
her first book.
We love you so much, Sister!
