Gift of firewood added to annual woodcut total to help Tribal elders in need
On three Saturdays each year, a group of
volunteers including members of the Tribe’s
Natural Resources Committee spend the
day loading and delivering free firewood to
elders’ homes. Many Tribal elders depend
on firewood to take the chill off during
winter and keep electricity bills affordable.
Usually the source of firewood is from
logging or other operations on Tribal
lands. In a welcome twist, last month Deb-
bie and Mark Hess of South Beach, Ore.,
gave a gift of firewood from land they are
clearing for a future home site.
Though relatively new to the Oregon
Coast, they had heard of the Siletz Tribe
and wanted to donate the logs. Staff of the

the wood to the firewood area in Siletz.
The estimated 28 cords of mixed
fir, spruce and coast pine are a welcome
addition to the wood already stockpiled
for elder woodcuts.
During 2018 a total of 32 cords of
firewood were delivered to elders. Fire-
wood is available to Tribal elders who
have requested delivery by contacting the
Elders Program at 541-444-8261 or 800-
922-1399, ext. 1261.
The last elder wood cutting date in
2019 is Saturday, Sept. 21, at a site near
the USDA Food Program in Siletz, Ore.
Volunteers are needed to help as many
elders as possible.

to help you gain and maintain employment in Oregon’s legal marijuana industry.
With funding provided by the Siletz Tribal Council, we can assist American Indians
(enrolled in a federally recognized Tribe or descendant) who reside within the service
area with licensing fees, background checks, testing fees, outdoor work clothing/tools
and transportation assistance.
