The Siletz Color Guard
Celebration of Honor thanks those in Armed Forces
By Teresa Simmons
Each year the Siletz Tribe and Chi-
nook Winds Casino Resort hold a celebra-
tion to honor all veterans of the Armed
Services, active duty personnel and their
families. Aptly named the Celebration of
Honor, this solemn and meaningful event
draws people come from far and wide to
be part of it.
A breathtaking view of 1,000 full-size
American flags billowing in the breeze
with a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean
greeted guests as they descended the hill
approaching the casino. A large group of
friends and family watched as more than
50 veterans received the Oregon Veterans
Medal in a special ceremony at the field
on Sept. 16.
Veterans were invited to enjoy a free
live concert and free dining in the buf-
fet. Displays included The Oregon KIA
Memorial Wall, Wall of Honor (Iraq and
Afghanistan), Living Military History
Weapons Display, Spirit of 45 (collecting
WWII photos), a life-size wood statue
of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima and
a veterans services information tent for
veterans and their families.
The Oregon Veterans Military Edu-
cational Display once again joined the
event in the Convention Center with a
special tribute to Siletz Tribal member
Paul Youngman (photo below), who was
killed in the Vietnam War.
State Rep. David Gomberg gave the
keynote address at the Rededication of the
Desert Storm Memorial on Sept. 16 and
on Sept. 17, a 5K Run for Honor was held.
Five beautiful and meaningful days
were dedicated to those brave men and
women who protect and serve and truly
deserve our gratitude.
To the editor:
This drawing was given to me by a little buddy of mine while at lunch after the
eclipse. It’s what the solar eclipse looked like as seen by a 7 year old.
It’s amazing to see an educational experience like this through the mind of a kid, he
noticed everything! He noticed the gold ring, the solar corona and a planet. He described
his art to me with all its details. I have framed this piece and will keep it always.
I’d like to thank you, Jordan, for being a great friend.
Love, Dub Bellinger
