Kathleen VanPelt Forster – 1927-2014
Kathleen VanPelt Forster was
born Aug. 15, 1927, and passed away
March 7, 2014, from complications of
pneumonia, dementia and Alzheimer’s
disease. She was 86 years old and had
lived in Siletz, Ore., with her husband,
Richard, since 2006.
Born in Requa, Calif., Kathleen
and her folks moved to Waldport, Ore.,
opening commercial cabins. The family
moved to Forest Grove, Ore., where
Kathleen finished high school, entered
a beauty college in Portland, Ore., and
was a beautician in Portland for 10 years.
While attending college, Kathleen
joined a ladies-only big band. Becoming
a great saxophonist, she performed with
five big bands (including the Yachats Big
Band) in Oregon and Washington and had
numerous appearances in concert bands.
She also played the violin.
Kathleen possessed Indian blood
quantum in the Tututni, Chetco and
Tolowa Tribes of Oregon and California.
Survivors include her husband, Rich-
ard, to whom she had been married for
more than 46 years; two sons by a former
marriage, Mick and Ken Courtwright,
both of Washington state; three grand-
children and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held March 9.
No other service is planned at this time.

ton Cemetery in Siletz.
