Home Visiting program starts outreach in Tribal community, more to come
By Patrice Clevenger, Coordinator
Activities: I spoke at an Elders Coun-
cil meeting in Lincoln City and shared
some statistics from our needs assessment
done by Eleanor Gil-Kashiwabara, Ph.D.,
and Danielle Droppers, MSW, from the
Portland State Research Institute.
I talked about the poverty level and
some of the struggles young parents face
today both in and out of Tribal life. I asked
for the Elders’ help in providing their
ideas of what should be covered in the
Home Visiting Program when we begin
implementation.
In addition, a Tribal Focus was held
in May to gather additional information
from Tribal members. Because of the
low turnout, however, we didn’t gain any
new information.
The Home Visiting Program has now
formed an Advisory Committee to help
direct the program and assist in making
decisions about program needs.
The group met in late May to discuss
different parenting program options for
us to use. The top two programs selected
were Healthy Families America and Fam-
ily Spirit. We will implement the Healthy
Families program using additional cur-
riculum focusing on Tribal culture from
Family Spirit, a program out of Johns
Hopkins University.
I’d like to thank the Advisory Com-
mittee for the hard work they have
already done and will continue to do in
the future. Thanks to Katy Holland, Fawn
Metcalf, Trish Carey, DeAnn Brown, Patti
McKinney and Danielle Droppers for
helping make great decisions as we move
forward to training with our new model
developers.
If anyone else is interested in being
a part of the Home Visiting Advisory
Council, please let me know.
Next Steps: Advertise and hire for
the position of outreach specialist for
our program. We are looking for a Tribal
member who has a desire to help young
parents and their families by providing
information on education, baby care, self-
sufficiency, positive parenting, etc. Lots
of training will be provided.
If you know someone, tell them to
watch for the job announcement. It should
be out soon.
Our first training in Salem is sched-
uled for the end of July. In addition, we
will hire home visitors for the other areas
in our 11-county service area.
After staff is hired and begin train-
ing, we will begin to recruit families to
participate in our Home Visiting Program.
If you are a young parent, are pregnant or
might be soon, I hope you will consider
being part of our program.

Time to gather materials for baskets
Hazel stick gathering is a must for
anyone interested in making traditional
Siletz baskets. Spruce root can be dug all
year round and is used for the weavers or
weft of Siletz baskets.
Bear grass and maidenhair fern are
used for overlay to make our traditional
designs or marks in our baskets and both
are picked in late summer.
Tribal members interested in gather-
ing can call Bud Lane at 800-922-1399,
ext. 1320, or 541-444-8320, or e-mail
budl@ctsi.nsn.us. Just a reminder –
basket materials must be gathered in a
