Tribe appreciates donation of 2 baskets by daughter of former agency doctor

In the summer and fall of 2012,
Joanne Callender Borshowa, daughter
of one-time Siletz Agency doctor, O.N.
Callender MD, Physician and Surgeon,
had conversations with Buddy Lane,
cultural education director, that resulted
in a donation of two nice Siletz baskets
to the Tribe’s collection in memory of
Dr. Callender.
Joanne recalls accompanying her
father on his visits to the agency vividly
and fondly. She and the family kept very
good care of the baskets in the years since
his service to the Siletz community ended.
She loved and respected her father
very much and wanted to make the dona-
tion in his honor so he also will be remem-
bered in this way for his years of service to
our community and the surrounding area.

Editor’s note: An article on a new
Tribal housing project in the February
issue of Siletz News requires some
clarification, listed below. Siletz News
regrets any confusion the article may
have caused.
Original statement: Qualified par-
ticipants have the option to purchase
the home after the lease period reaches
six months and for up to three years.
Clarification: The Tribe will cre-
ate the Home of Your Own Program
that will produce qualified families to
lease, and within three years, transfer title
ownership. Qualified participants will be
able to exercise the option to purchase at
any time from six months after the home
lease begins up to three years.
Original statement: STHD will factor
in disability, health and safety issues in
the selection process, with grants awarded
from a waiting list.
Clarification: Household income
must be adequate to support the given
lease payment and the eventual mort-
gage payment at the time the applicant
is accepted to the HYO Program with-
out exceeding 30 percent of adjusted
household income. Income level must be
verifiable for the two years immediately
preceding application date. Applicants
must have positive landlord references.
Original statement: Selection will be
on a first-come, first- served basis with
a stipulation of one-time assistance per
household every six years. Tribal mem-
bers living anywhere in the United States
can use this program.
Clarification: For the initial selection
of participants in this program, Tribal
members who meet income eligibility
and are currently on the homeownership
waiting list will have priority consid-
eration. Individuals who have applied
will be considered for entrance into the
program if slots become available on a
first-come, first-served basis. Participant
must have or be able to establish reason-
able credit by the end of the lease term,
may not be a current homeowner and
may not have any past due debt to the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians.

The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund (STCCF) Board is currently
accepting applications from Tribal members for a three-year appointment beginning
July 2013 through June 2016. Applications must be received by May 30, 2013.
The STCCF Advisory Board is composed of seven unpaid members, including
a Siletz Tribal Council representative; three Siletz Tribal members; two non-Tribal
members agreed upon by the governor and Tribal chairman and approved by the
Tribal Council; and one non-Tribal member selected by the Tribal chairman and
approved by the Tribal Council, from a list submitted by the governor. The board
receives travel reimbursement only for attendance at meetings, distributions and
other approved public relations events.
The advisory board meets quarterly (January, April, July and October) to
review approximately 100 applications received from charitable organizations
or local governments.
