Vision Maker Media seeks proposals for public television media fund
LINCOLN, Neb. – Vision Maker
Media has announced a March 15 dead-
line for proposals from independent and
public television producers for the 2013
Public Media Content Fund.
With funding from the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting, the Vision Maker
Media Public Media Content Fund will
award support to video projects with
significant Native involvement – particu-
larly projects that profile American Indian
leaders, activists and artists – and help
bring the projects to national broadcast
on public television.
Submitted proposals must be post-
marked by March 15, 2013.
“The purpose of this funding oppor-
tunity is to increase the diversity of voices
in public media,” said Assistant Director
Georgiana Lee (Navajo). “There are very
few avenues open to documentary film-
makers and we believe that Vision Maker
Media has a great responsibility to support
the creation, promotion and distribution of
Native media. We also believe that support
from our organization can help open doors
for various forms of additional funding for
our filmmakers.”
Projects in any phase of production
are eligible to apply for funding with
Vision Maker Media. Awards for research
and development range from $5,000 to
$20,000; awards for production or comple-
tion can be up to $100,000; and new media
awards range from $5,000 to $20,000.
Vision Maker Media does not fully
fund programs and awardees are required
to seek additional funding from other
sources.
Programs selected for funding will
be offered additional distribution oppor-
tunities, including educational and home
DVD distribution through visionmak-
ermedia.org. Theatrical, non-theatrical,
television (free, pay syndicated and
video-on-demand), multimedia and
Internet broadcasting (i.e., podcasting
and streaming) rights are included in this
distribution opportunity.
“First and foremost, Vision Maker
Media is looking for compelling Native
stories. Priority will be given to projects
intended for the series Native Word: Sto-
ries Past & Present,” said Executive Direc-
tor Shirley K. Sneve (Rosebud Sioux).
“Second, we would like to see programs
that accurately illuminate aspects of
contemporary Tribal cultures or peoples.
The primary audience is PBS viewers, so
Vision Maker Media wants stories that
transcend American Indian and Alaska
Native culture.”
Vision Maker Media convenes a
panel of public television profession-
als, independent producers and Native
resource experts to review submissions
and recommend proposals for funding.
Additionally, Vision Maker Media assists
producers with fundraising, navigating
