Girls learn life lessons on volleyball court for first time
By Glenn Yarbrough
My daughter, Amber Yarbrough,
played her very first sport this year on the
Siletz Valley School Lady Warriors fifth/
sixth-grade volleyball team.
This is a very exciting time for a
parent to show support, participate and
encourage personal goals from start to
finish and all the in-betweens. Completion
no matter the score, win or lose – it is the
knowledge gained on the chosen path that
is priceless to undertake.
The first game was Oct. 6 and the
season will finish up Nov. 3 at the Siletz
Rec Center. The ladies played Newport,
Waldport, Toledo and Lincoln City.

The ladies won their first game of the
season, with most of them taking the court
for the first time.
All these young ladies are wonder-
fully athletic, intelligent and very diligent,
thriving not only in games but on the
practice court as well. It is a wonderful
opportunity to watch their growth, educa-
tion and success – and see them rise above
and learn from disappointment in losing
to opponents.
This is very brave of all these young
ladies. It must be hard to take the game
on the court for the first time in life as a
representative and team member.
The impact is strong, offering eth-
ics and moral strength in several aspects

of life. Thank you, Coach Tosha and
Coach Heather. The smiles, “high fives,”
laughs, cheers and teamwork brought me
much joy.
To my daughter, Amber – I am so
proud of you. Not only did you take it
upon yourself to try out, you are so eager
to go and play, learn and help. You over-
came your jitters and nerves and stepped
up and out. Remember, “The only stupid
question is the one not asked.”
Keep up the great work(out)! Set,
call, return, serve, spike – just do your
best. After all, it’s a game. You all are
awesome!
I love you, Amber.
