Hello, relatives:
Lakota Oyate Ki (Native Culture Club) and Religious Services, located within the
walls of the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Ore., are in search of new volunteers
to assist the Native American men in a cultural/traditional way of life. Volunteers are
needed to pour water for Inipi Ceremonies (Sweat Lodge).
Every Saturday, there are two Sweat Lodge Ceremonies - 7-11 a.m. and 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. A sack lunch, juice, towels and medicines (sage, tobacco, cedar, juniper,
lavender, copal and others) will be provided, plus plenty of water.
The volunteer for this ceremony has to pass a police background check to be
cleared to enter the prison. If you are interested or have more questions, please feel
free to speak with one of our ODOC Spiritual Volunteers (Card Holder) Jubel Perkins
at 503-784-7082 orjperkins@naranorthwest.org.
Once authorized to enter the facility, the volunteer will be notified by phone, e-mail
or fax. A certain Saturday of the month will be confirmed with the volunteer and if the
volunteer has any special medicines other than items mentioned above, please notify
the chaplain so these items can be authorized/placed on a 121-Clearance Form.
To volunteer, contact the OSP chaplain, Phil Holbrook, at 503-373-1350; by fax
at 503-378-4262; or by e-mail at Phillip.E.Holbrook@doc.state.or.us. Best time to
contact is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If leaving a message, please
make sure to leave a return telephone number and best times to reach you.
We thank you for taking the time to consider this request and we look forward to
hearing from you.
Respectfully,
Lakota Oyate Ki (Native Culture Club)
