Self-Sufficiency helps people obtain GEDs, jobs

Harvard offers
no tuition option
for some students
Harvard University has announced
that undergraduate students from low-
income families now will pay no tuition.
In making the announcement, Har
vard’s president Lawrence H. Summers
said, “When only 10 percent of the stu
dents in elite higher education come from
families in the lower half of the income
distribution, we are not doing enough.
We are not doing enough in bringing elite
higher education to the lower half of the
income distribution.”
If you know of a family earning less
than $60,000 a year with an honor student
graduating from high school soon, Har
vard University wants to pay the tuition.

Siletz Tribal member Samantha
Gamboa has been actively participating
in the 477 Self-Sufficiency Program in
Siletz and GED classes at Oregon Coast
Community College.
She recently obtained her GED at
the same time she was nine months preg
nant. She is a perfect example of what
the program strives for. Her motivation
and determination now have made her
job-ready so she can support her new
beautiful baby girl.
The Self-Sufficiency Program would
like to congratulate her on overcoming a
huge barrier with a Siletz Tribal Pendleton
blanket and an incentive gift card.
We wish you the best in your future
endeavors.

Simmons all have been active in the 477
Self-Sufficiency Program in Siletz. They
have been actively job searching while in
the program and participating in various
other activities.

Tribal Student Incentive Program again available
The Siletz Tribal Council estab
lished a Student Incentive Program to
reward student achievements as they
graduate from the following levels:
Head Start/Preschool
Kindergarten
Elementary School
Students can submit a copy of their
graduation certificate, name and mail
ing address to the education specialist
for their area. The education special
ist will submit the certificate for the
student incentive and mail the incentive
to the student.
