tory and political science with a minor in

years on the UO club lacrosse team and
plans to go to law school.
At the University of Oregon EMU and
Many Nations Longhouse on Feb. 4, the
Lyllye B. Parker Women of Color Summit
was held. This summit aimed to honor the
work that people have done before us in
the fight for social justice by continuing to
build bridges that lead to positive change.
Her parents are Paula (Lane) and
Gilbert Espino and her grandparents are
Alfred Lane Jr. and Clarice Lane.
Siletz Tribal members Leslie Lundy,
Rebecca Espino and Tiffany Stuart dem
onstrated the Siletz Feather Dance during
the summit.
I am a graduate student majoring in
elementary and secondary special educa
tion. I am a UO Native American Student
Union member and a grant recipient for
the Sapsik wala Project (a component of
the University of Oregon Native Ameri
can Initiative). I plan to teach in a Native
American community.
This year's theme was United:
Acknowledging the Past. Being Present and
Creating Change. Keynote speakers were
Lyllye B. Parker and Nanci Luna Jimenez.
During the Siletz women’s perfor
mance, 1 talked about the history of
the Eugene area in relation to Siletz
people and how these dances were held
in families’ homes for many years. I
also explained that it took many years of
change for the U.S. government to allow
the practice of Native dances.
The three Siletz Tribal women are
current University of Oregon students.
