Fish and Wildlife Club in the making
By Stan van de Wetering, Tribal
Aquatics Program Leader
Do you like to hunt and or fish? Do
you have an interest in furthering the
Tribe’s efforts to support fish, deer, elk
and other animal populations?
Maybe you are interested in mussels
or bobcats, cougars, hawks or bugs and
butterflies. Maybe you just like hiking in
the woods and wish we had more trails
on Tribal lands.
I would like to see what level of interest
exists for both kids and adults. If we have
some folks who have particular interests and
those interests match the general goals of
the Tribe, we might be able to begin to do
things that currently can’t get accomplished
by the Tribe because of a lack of funding
or restrictions on available funds.
For instance, we could use volunteers
to monitor adult salmon moving into our
three focus tributaries - Cedar, Euchre and
Rock creeks to help provide a better under
standing of what we need to do to improve
those fisheries. We could trap baby salmon
as they leave our hatchery ponds to improve
our understanding of their survival.
We could monitor game movement
on our lands and adjacent lands and look
at non-game animals as well. We could
use this information to guide elk and deer
habitat restorations. We could create more
opportunities for youth and adult hunting
and fishing activities.
The possibilities go on and on and
would be dependent on volunteer avail
ability and interest. If you, your child or
friends think you might be interested in
some sort of activity like those described
here, please contact Kelley Ellis at 541-
444-8227 or 800-922-1399, ext. 1227. I
will then get in touch with you and discuss
what level of response we see and how we
might proceed.

Lilly Whitehead joins several others to clean fish during an outing at Culture Camp
in July 2011. Nearly 120 Tribal children took part in catching about 500 trout
during six trips to the Tribe’s Lhuuke Illahee Fish Hatchery. Additionally, adults
helped kids fish during several Family Fishing Days last summer.

The following recipe is from Pam
Barlow-Lind in the Tribal Planning
Department, who took sixth place in our
recipe contest.
Sweet Italian Sausage
and Cabbage
Package of sweet Italian sausages:
Microwave 3-4 minutes; put in big pot
with a little oil. Sauté until browned. Turn
heat down to simmer.
Chop and rinse a cabbage.* Put
still-wet cabbage into big pot and cover.
There's enough water left to steam it done
in about 15 minutes. The trick is to leave
it alone to steam, then stir it all up when
the cabbage is tender and the juice is ready
to flavor everything.
Guys like this.
It might be possible with hamburger;
I’d try meatball-size chunks cooked with
onion* and seasoned. Probably good, just
really good with the sausages.
