Tribal vocational rehabilitation program opens doors
By Andrew Johanson
We have good news - the Siletz
Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation Program
(STVRP) is now open.
As a new Tribal program, we are
here to serve as an employment resource
for disabled Tribal members who have a
strong desire to be employed and want to
return to the workforce.
This program is grounded in a
strength-basis approach to employment
readiness. An important part of this pro
gram is helping others find their strengths
and build strong foundations for lasting
and productive employment.
Similar to other Siletz Tribal pro
grams, we offer services within the
11-county service area to qualifying
Tribal members with a documented dis
ability. Some of the services we provide
will constitute productive rehabilita
tion and integration into the workforce.
Example services we may provide are:
•
•
Employment Services
Portfolio Building
•
•
•
•
Motivational Counseling
Addressing and Eliminating Barriers
to Employment
Culturally Relevant Services for
Rehabilitation
Mental, Educational and Physical
Health Assessments
As a new program in the Tribal
community, we will provide the com
munity with program updates, stories of
participant success and other information
relevant to employment within the Siletz
Tribal community.
The 2011 Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife’s statewide fall salmon fish
ing regulations allow for a lower deadline
on the Siletz River. This new deadline will
be at Ojalla Bridge on Highway 229 near
the Toledo Elks’ Toketee Illahee Park.
The Siletz Tribe requested this change
in regulation to allow for reduced catch
of the declining fall Chinook salmon
population.
In past years, Tribal staff have com
pleted surveys across the Siletz basin and
have observed that around one-third of the
spawning population occurs in the stretch
of river from the Mill Park ramp down to
Ojalla Bridge. Because the vast majority
of fish caught in this area are too dark to
keep and catch-and-release likely results in
increased stress to the fish, the Tribe sup
ported the closure of this area for fishing
in order to protect the declining salmon.
Tribal staff members are working to
develop additional fishing opportunities/
sites on the Tribal Bull’s Bag property.
For more information on access to
these sites for fall fishing, contact Kelley
Ellis at 541-444-8227 or 800-922-1399,
ext. 1227.

Help needed at last Cut Wood for the Elders Day of year
The Tribal Natural Resources Com
mittee and Natural Resources Department
will sponsor the last Cut Wood for the
Elders Day of the year on Sept. 17.
Elders. Bring your chainsaws, hydraulic
wood splitters, splitting mauls, axes and
lots of energy. Lunch, drinks and snacks
will be provided.
The woodcut will be held at the log
yard at the Tribe’s Toledo Mill property
off Sturdevant Road in Toledo, Ore. Enter
at the log yard entrance (go straight all
the way to the end of Sturdevant Road,
through the chain-link fence gate and
down the hill to the railroad tracks and
the wood cutting area).
We will meet at the Tribal adminis
tration building in Siletz at 8 a.m. and
caravan to the cutting site. For anyone
wishing to come later, directions to the
cutting site will be posted on the front
door of the building.
We need lots of volunteers to help
cut, split and deliver firewood for Tribal
The goal of this event is to deliver fire
wood to as many Elders as possible. The
Elders Program maintains a list of Elders
who bum wood for their winter heat.
People willing to haul firewood to
Elders outside of the Siletz area should
contact the Elders Program clerk at SOO-
922-1399, ext. 1261, or 541-444-8261 to
be paired up with an Elder in need. We
especially need folks who can haul wood
to the Eugene, Salem and Portland areas.
Elders in need of firewood also should
contact the Elders Program clerk to get
their name on the delivery list.
If you have parents or grandparents
who burn wood in the winter to stay
warm, you need to help out at this event!
Come help replenish those wood piles.
This will be the last event of the year.

As you know, the winning receipe,
submitted by Daniel Brown of Siletz, was
Pork Chop Suey. We encourage you to
try this recipe, it’s very good and pretty

The height of the tower will allow
other cell phone carriers the option of co
locating their antennas on the tower and
it should be available for the location of
other community-related equipment, such
as that of the Siletz Valley Fire District.
The cell phone tower is just one of
many investments the Tribe has made in
the community. Other examples include
funding for Siletz Valley Schools, the
Siletz Public Library and the Siletz Valley
Fire District; building the Tillicum Fitness
Center, the gymnasium and the new Siletz
Community Health Clinic; and provid
ing water tanks and street and sidewalk
improvements in the city of Siletz.

cabbage. Cook for about 20 minutes with
a lid on the pan. It’s done when the cab
bage is cooked down.
Serve it over rice.
We will publish all of the recipes over
the next several months. Try them all, they
are fantastic.
