    Chairman’s Report
The People are Dancing Again
A group of 21 Tribal members partici
pated in the Siletz Festival at the National
Museum of the American Indian on July
8-10 in Washington, D.C. The group
included Tribal Council members, staff
and family members.
Kevin Gover, museum director,
invited Siletz to participate when he vis
ited in May 2010. Arrangements began
taking shape a few months ago.
The agenda included displays of
regalia and basketry; Feather Dance; and
demonstrations of basket weaving, jew
elry making and other forms of weaving.
Charles Wilkinson was present along
with council for a panel discussion on the
book, The People Are Dancing Again.
After the presentation, the book was avail
able for purchase and Charles for signing
it. Book sales went well and all proceeds
from the sale of it go to our Tribe.
As visitors to the museum passed
through, they asked many questions about
our Tribe and its history. It was a great
opportunity for us to inform the public about
who we are and where we come from.
At the same time we were at the
museum, the Smithsonian Folklife Festi
val was happening on the Mall. A group of
visitors from Colombia’s Amazon region
visited us, inviting us to dance with them
on the Mall.
Bud Lane organized the dancers
so that when they finished the Feather
Dance, they went outdoors to the site of
the Amazonian people. Both the Colombi
ans and Siletz enjoyed a welcome dance.
Other dances were exchanged and some
gifts exchanged (Bud had prepared some
Pendleton bags he had sewn together and
brought along as gifts).
This was quite a memorable event
for our Tribe, the museum and for all the
visitors. We also enjoyed visits with Tribal
members who live in the Washington,
D.C., area.
A big thank you goes to Bud for
organizing the event and making all
the arrangements. Thanks also to volun
teers who were a great help: Cheryl and
Alissa Lane, Bonnie Crawford and Kathy
Robinson.
All eight of the council members who
attended participated in several ways. The
dancers were awesome.
Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days
The Tribal Council attended Pi-Ume-
Sha at the invitation of the Warm Springs
Tribal Council.
The Friday evening get-together is
always warm and friendly, visiting with
friends and other invited guests. On Sat
urday, our Tribal Council participated in
the Chief Nelson Wallulatum Memorial
Parade. It’s about a two-mile walk from
the school down to the pow-wow grounds.
We will always remember the chief
for his memorable visits to Siletz, his
kind words, his humor, his intelligence
and for the many years he served on the
Warm Springs Tribal Council. He was a
true friend of the Siletz and we were proud
to know him.
