the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse and recycle)

Mark Saelens, manager of the Lincoln County Sustainability and Solid Waste
District, presents the “Watt Wagon” and demonstrates to Tracy Bailey, construction
project manager, how it’s used to make popcorn.
Fawn Metcalf shared: “My son (Quinton) had never seen a popcorn popper before
(microwave was all he knew, just as most of the children growing up these days!)
and when he had seen the popcorn being popped out of the popper, he was sooo
amazed and thought it was the coolest invention ever! I told him that they had been
around for a while and it was actually a little old school, but he was positive that it
was the most impressive - new to him - idea! Just like the whole Jiffy Pop idea. He
was like “Watch out! It’s going to explode, Mom!” ... too cute!”

The grasshopper, car and cockroach
all of which had a mini-solar panel or
solar cell that operated with sunlight
Solar camping lantern with LED
lighting
A solar pack that operated a small fan
(to show the power of the sun - as
some of the solar cells were covered,
the the fan ran slower)
Mini-water heater exhibit using water
bottles and the sun
The Renewable Energy Trailer - the
“Watt Wagon” - has on it solar
panels and an actual wind turbine
power generator.

Displays inside of the gym included
reusable grocery bags made out of 100
percent recycled products, biodegradable
garbage and sandwich bags, compostable
tableware and energy saving products.
