Proposals due for Royalty crowns
The Pow-Wow Committee is now accepting proposals for the 2011 -2012 royalty
crowns. The crowns are for Miss Siletz, Jr. Miss Siletz and Little Miss Siletz.
All proposals need to have a proposed design, size and cost. You can submit a
proposal for as many crowns as you would like. The proposals must be turned in to
the committee by April 30.

PSU seeks students for new American
Indian Urban Teachers Program
Portland State University’s Graduate
School of Education (GSE) is recruiting
student candidates for its new project, the
American Indian Urban Teacher Program,
funded by the Office of Indian Education,
the U.S. Department of Education.
Principal investigators are Cornel
Pewewardy, Ed.D., director, Indigenous
Nations Studies Department; and Micki
Caskey, Ph.D., Curriculum and Instruc­
tion, GSE. Project director is Maria
Tenorio, Ed.D. (ABD).
Portland State applied for the four-
year professional development grant in
consortia with the Confederated Tribes of
Siletz Indians, the Confederated Tribes of
Warm Springs, the Confederated Tribes
of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and
the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
The first cohort of students will begin
classes in July to earn a teaching license.
American Indian students enrolled
in the program will be awarded tuition,
fees and books, and a living allowance
that includes dependent care. The pro­
gram will prepare 18 American Indian
teachers over the next four years to teach
in schools with significant numbers of
Native students enrolled.
Portland State is one of eight colleges
and universities in the nation awarded
funding.

Students interested in enrolling for
the 2012 teacher education program
should contact the program office to
receive an application as early as possible.
The deadline of Dec. 1,2011, requires
an online application be submitted to both
Portland State and the Graduate Teacher
Education Program, as well as the sub­
mission of three letters of recommenda­
tion and copies of transcripts (unofficial
transcripts are acceptable until official
transcripts are available).
While graduate students are not
required to take the Graduate Record
Exam (GRE), all teachers applying for a
state license are required by the Teachers
Standards and Practices Commission to
take either the CBEST or the Praxis. Each
academic department also may have other
testing requirements prior to admission.

Commodity recipe
Beef and Bean Burritos by Derek Simmons
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef or 24 ounces canned
beef*
10 flour tortillas
*/2 cup chopped red onion*
1 clove garlic, minced
2(15 ounce) cans red kidney beans*
1 tablespoon chili powder
V2 teaspoon salt
6 drops hot sauce (optional)
1 cup shredded cheese*
1 cup sour cream
* Indicates commodity foods used
Preparation
Wrap tortillas in foil and warm in
oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, cook ground beef, onion
and garlic in skillet until browned, drain
grease. Mash kidney beans in liquid until
smooth. Stir hot sauce, chili powder and
salt into beans mixture and add beef. Cook
3 minutes over medium heat. Remove
from heat and spoon V2 cup beef mixture
into center of each tortilla. Top with Ched­
dar cheese and sour cream. Tuck two sides
over filling and then roll up. Makes up to
10 burritos.

commodity foods. Recipes can be sub­
mitted by anyone interested, including
USDA clients.
The deadline to submit recipes to the
USDA staff is April 29. Recipes can be
submitted by mail, fax, e-mail or bring it

The winner will be decided by our
clients after taking home submitted reci­
pes to cook using their commodities. The
deadline for clients to try out submitted
recipes is May 31.
Voting on the recipes will take place
during the June distribution dates for
the Siletz and Salem clients. The winner
will be contacted during the first week of
July. The selected winner’s recipe will be
printed in the August issue of Siletz News.
As an incentive to our clients for try­
ing these recipes and taking the time to
vote, we will offer a $25 gift card to one
person at the Siletz warehouse and one
person at the Salem warehouse. Names
of voting clients who tried the recipes and
voted will be put into a hat and drawn by
USDA staff. The winner will be contacted
by phone or mail if we are not able to
make contact by phone.
