efit. They are to be commended for their
donations and work on the fund-raising
drive for the American Cancer Society.
We have not only lost many Tribal
members to cancer, but currently have
several members receiving treatment for
cancer. Sar Richards and Andrea Butler
went far beyond just fund-raising for
this benefit, they dressed as Richard
Simmons and Wonder Woman (see photo
on page 4). Good job, Sar and Andrea and
to all others who put “heart and soul” into
this drive.
The 15,h anniversary celebration of
Chinook Winds Casino Resort was held
in June with fireworks, cake and a lunch
elegantly prepared by recently hired
executive chef Jack Strong. The weather
was perfect and the attendance was great
for this special occasion.
We are very pleased and proud that
Chinook Winds was successful in hiring
Jack as our casino’s executive chef (see
story on page 4). He is the grandson of
Wilma Strong, a graduate of top culinary
academies and already is nationally rec
ognized for his superb culinary abilities.
Observations:
My Trip to South Dakota
Having just returned from our vaca
tion through South Dakota, I would like
to comment on our casino compared to
others across the country.
We visited four Indian casinos as well
as non-Tribal casinos in Deadwood. We
really have much to be proud of - none
comes close to ours in terms of food
venues, customer service, hotel accom
modations, location and the quality of
our employees. Chinook Winds is by far
superior to any of those we visited and
experienced elsewhere.

Fund-raising for Cancer
I was proud to read in the Chinook
Winds Bulletin that our employees in the
Siletz and Lincoln City areas made excep
tional contributions to the Relay For Life
cancer benefit. Chemawa Indian School
The Passing of Hiroto Zakoji
It is with great sorrow that the Siletz Tribe learned of the passing of Hiroto
“Zak” Zakoji on July 27 at age 83. He was a friend of Indian Country who helped
a multitude of Tribes in numerous ways. He will be remembered for his dedica
tion and desire to support Indian causes. He worked with the Siletz Tribe as a
consultant for many years and will be greatly missed.

Council member Bud Lane and I at
tended funeral services for Chief Nelson
Wahlulatum last month in Warm Springs.
He was a gentle spokesperson with much
knowledge of Tribal culture and history and
a leader who served for 51 years as a chief
on the Warm Springs Tribal Council.
You will recall that he spoke at one
of our Restoration celebrations and two
years ago he, Chief Joe Moses and Delvis
Heath served as our grand marshals for
our pow-wow parade.
As a young man, he visited Siletz
many times and actively supported us
during our Restoration efforts. We will
miss him deeply.
