Wisdom Chaparones Nez Perce Tribal Youth at NWIYC 2010 in Seattle By Tiffany Wisdom The Northwest Indian Youth Confer ence was held April 7-10,2010, in Seattle, Wash. The Muckleshoot Tribe hosted the approximately 600 youth who were in attendance. I was able to chaperone five Nez Perce youth with Teresa Oatman (Kamiah JOM director). Stella Penney, senior, won first place in the art contest. Stella also partici pated in the speech and essay contest. Morgan Sublett, Willissa Walker and Sandrine Penney also participated in the es say contest. Davis Bear sang a round dance song in the talent show. Approximately 50 youth participated in the competitions. All of the Nez Perce youth from Lapwai, Kamiah and Kooskia helped in the presentation of stick games. All stick game participants received a hacky sack or "lite is sacred” dog-tag chain from Nevada Indian Health Suicide Preven tion Services (thank you to Claudia Castaneda-Melendez, Tribal Youth Sui cide Prevention Project Director, Indian Health Board of Nevada) for providing these items). The youth selected Yellow Wolf as the Nez Perce ancestor representative. For the culture exchange, the youth painted rawhide bags. Thanks to Mike Wisdom Jr. for helping to prepare the materials. Hattie Kaufmann (Nez Perce), a correspondent with CBS, gave a great motivational speech. “Show Up” was her motto. Her stories from childhood to life in the newsroom truly connected with our group. The students also met Chaske Spencer (New Moon), Wes Studi (Last of the Mohi cans), Vaughn Eaglebear (Smoke Signals, Johns Wayne's Teeth, singer) and Patrick Shining Elk (Christmas in the Clouds). Students heard from many great pre senters in workshops (like Renee Holt, Navajo/Nez Perce), attended a dance, pow-wow and cultural dinner of salmon, crab and clams. We learned about the Canoe Cultural Journey and the songs and dances. Approximately 20 colleges and uni versities were at the NWIYC college fair. 1 represented Lewis-Clark State College. Siletz Tech, con’t from page 1 “The opportunity to work with the Siletz Tribal Business Corporation came about and it looked like a very good partnership,” said Hollingsworth. “Since the ’80s, local governments across the nation have been devoting significant resources to recruiting for local employment. More recently, research has shown the most effective job creation is to grow them at home - economic gardening.” The gardeners for Siletz Technologies include Andy Still, operations manager; Brian Doherty, software development engineer; and Brandy Florendo, Fish Martinez, Karen Parker, Mark Pullam, Darin Rilatos, Nathan Wills and Oliver Yardley, who are learning how to test computer software. This is exactly what we had in mind when we were seeking out things to fund, said Walker. Rural Oregon and Tribal governments don’t want a handout, but a hand up.” May 31,2010*11 a.m. Government Hill • Siletz, Oregon Procession to Veterans Memorial West Coast Boyz Honor Guard The Lord’s Prayer- Siletz Royalty Welcome - Alfred “Bud” Lane III Memorial Day Address - Tony Molina Presentation of Flowers Gun Salute - Honor Guard Taps Closing - West Coast Boyz Lunch at the Tribal Community Center Provided by the Cultural Heritage Committee - Noon We would like to acknowledge and thank the following participants: West Coast Boyz Siletz Royalty Honor Guard Tony Molina Cultural Heritage Committee May 2010 • Siletz News • 9
