STBC Asks for Ideas about Businesses with Survey for Tribal Members tion has developed a needs assessment tWrd^es^WsideofSTBC ^^trib^ for tor Siletz Siletz Tribal Tribal members members who who currently currently operate a business, have a desire to start a business or wish to learn about basic business principles. The needs assessment has been in cluded as an insert in this month’s issue of Siletz News and the Small Business Development Team encourages each and tion list and hndn^ survey and return it to them via e-mail, fax or regular mail or fill it out online. Michael Phillips and Stephen Larrabee, the Small Business Development Team for STBC, sat down recently to discuss the survey with Siletz News. Can you tell me why you devel oped the survey? As we discussed last month, the needs assessment is one of the seven points of our overall business development program. The survey will help develop a baseline for the actual needs of the Tribal members who are engaged, or what to be engaged, in business. When developing any program for a target audience, you need to under stand what their needs are before you can design and implement the program. What does the needs assess ment ask about? We identified 11 different categories as areas where Tribal members may need some support. For each category, we ask the individual completing the survey to rank the importance of this topic on a scale of 1 to 5. We designed it to be very easy to complete, but allowed for detailed feedback comments. Also, we wanted to respect Tribal member’s privacy. This survey will never give every Tribal member the option to opt-in or opt-out ofan e-mail distribu tion list and be added to the STBC website Tribal member small business directory if they are not already included. What are your plans after you have compiled the needs assess ment results? We will use the survey results to create and enhance other parts of our de velopment program. The information will be used to develop and conduct training sessions for Tribal members, help identify experts who could be valuable resources for Tribal members, identify grant pro grams and opportunities for both Tribal members and STBC, serve as the starting point for the business forums that bring as many Tribal members as possible for our e-mail distribution list. How many Tribal members are you looking for to respond? As many as possible and please empha size this. The assessment is really our main tool for hearing from as many members as possible in a short period of time. We also will conduct face-to-face interviews and visits with some Tribal members, but that is a much more time consuming process. We would love to hear from every Tribal member, though we understand that is probably not going to happen. So the focus of the survey is all Tribal members, not just ones living and working in the Pacific Northwest? Kenneth M. Hatch 1922-2010 Kenneth M. Hatch of Newport, Ore., was bom Oct. 16, 1922, to Nick K. Hatch and Hattie M. Hatch in Unalaska, Alaska, and passed on in his home in Newport on April 18, 2010. He was a member of the American Legion, the Retired Officers of the Emerald Empire and the Army Engineer Association. At the decedent’s request, no services will take place. Disposition will be by cre mation and the ashes will be placed at sea. opmenrR^ . P . Pr°gram 1S being developed and implemented for all Tribal members. We hope we get responses from any Tribal member who is interested, regardless of where they live. We then will be able to reach out readily to everyone we’ve built into this database. When are you looking to receive this information and is it easy to complete and return? We hope to get as many responses as possible as soon as possible. Once again, we would like to emphasize that the sooner we get the information, the sooner we can implement other components of the program. Also, we tried to make the process of completing and returning the assessment as simple as we could. It will only take a very short time to complete and the survey can be sent to us via e-mail, fax or regular mail or it can be filled out online. All of this informa tion is included on the survey itself. ............ ............................................ ......... ’ See y°U haVe included a Pro' I see you have included a pro motion motion along along with with the the survey? survey? Yes, we have. All Tribal members who fill out and return the survey by May 31 will be included in a raffle to win a $25 gift card from Walmart. We will give away 10 cards as part of this promotion. This is another way for us to encourage participation in the survey. Anything else you would like to say about the survey? Just that we both look forward to get ting a large response to this assessment so we can develop a very comprehensive and effective Small Business Program for Siletz Tribal members. We already have sent the survey out to the members on our existing list of businesses registered on our website and within a half hour we received five returned surveys! Those are the type of results we are looking for. It shows there are Tribal members very interested in the program and we are here to help them. . ........................ ........................... .
