Scott Creek North Unit Open for Firewood Cutting, Permits Required : Mark Dates for Annual Culture Camp ; July 13-15,2010 • Siletz, Oregon • • • Z • J • . Culture Camp will be held at the Tribal Community Center on Government Hill in Siletz. Camp is for Tribal members and Tribal families only. Children under age 10 must be chaperoned by an adult. The Camp Planning Committee is looking for volunteers to teach classes of cultural traditional nature and arts. Applications will be available at all area offices, the Tribal administration building and the Tribal Community Center. A new firewood cutting area is now open for Tribal members. Known as the Scott Creek North unit, this area is located approximately nine miles from Siletz. Permits are required and can be obtained at the Tribal Natural Resources of fice in the admin building in Siletz from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Maps and directions also are available at the same location. Permits will be issued to Tribal members only who will need to show their Tribal ID card and provide the license number of the vehicle they will use to haul the wood. Out-of- the-Siletz-area woodcutters can call the numbers below to have a permit mailed to them. Northwest Forest Passes Available The permits are for Tribal member woodcutting for personal use only. This firewood cannot be sold. The person named on the permit must be present when cutting and hauling the firewood. Tribal members wishing to cut wood for Tribal Elders must present a signed note from the Elder stating that the individual is authorized to cut firewood on their behalf. The note must include the Elder’s Tribal ID number. Permits are good for two weeks and allow up to two cords of wood to be cut on each permit. Each Tribal member is allowed up to five cords total per year from Tribal firewood units. The Tribal Natural Resources Department has Northwest Forest Passes available at no cost to Tribal members. These passes, which are good for a year, are good for vehicle parking at a variety of U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management trailheads, boat launches, picnic areas and visitor centers in Oregon and Washington. Normal cost for these annual passes is $30. The website www.fs.fed.us/r6/passespermits/sites-siuslaw-nf.shtml lists the places in the Siuslaw National Forest where these passes are needed. Other national forest websites list their pass-required locations. Stop by the Natural Resources Department office on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for more information or to pick up a pass. The woodcut will be held at the log deck off Gwee-Shut Road in Siletz (across the road from the new clinic). We need lots of volunteers, so bring your chain saws, hydraulic wood splitters, splitting mauls, axes and lots of energy. Lunch, drinks and snacks will be provided. We will meet at the Tribal adminis tration building at 8 a.m. and caravan to the cutting site. Anyone wishing to come later will find directions to the cutting site posted on the front door of the building. The goal of this event is to deliver firewood to as many Elders as possible. Elders' Program Clerk Brett Lane main tains a list of Elders who burn wood for their winter heat. People willing to haul firewood to Elders outside of the Siletz area should contact Brett at 800-922-1399, ext. 1261, or 541-444-8261 and he will pair you up with an Elder in need. We especially need folks who can haul wood to the Eugene, Salem and Portland areas. Elders in need of firewood also should contact Brett to get their name on the delivery list. If you have parents or grandparents who bum wood in the winter to stay warm, you need to help out at this event! No early calls to save a tag for someone. You must physically show up to obtain tag.
