Yankees Second at Monmouth
reprinted with permission of The News Guard in Lincoln City, Ore.; originally printed June 4, 2008
The Lincoln City Yankees minor
league team (10-1 1 year olds) fought
their way out of the loser's bracket by
winning three consecutive games to
advance to the championship game on
Sunday. May 25. at the Monmouth
Youth Classic little league baseball
tournament.
In the championship game, the
Yankees went up against the
Monmouth Reds, a team they had
played against in their second game on
Saturday and lost 11-10.
The Yankees defense put up quite
a fight against the Reds holding them
to just six runs in the championship
game, but it was the Yankees offense
that came up short. As a result, Lin
coln City had to settle for second place
as the Reds held on to win 6-2.
Yankee catcher Micah Grant had a
solid performance al the tournament as
he picked off eight basestealers and
was 14 of 20 including two triples and
a grand slam homer.
Kendall Giles was 18 of 23 and
stole home four times. Nathan Hertz
was 13 of 20 and Robert Padderson, 8
of 21.
The two-day tournament, in
Monmouth May 24 and 25. attracted
eight teams. The Monmouth Mariners
took third.
