It took a lot of time to move all the

June 2008
by Walt Klamath
Here it is almost summer and the frost is on the ground, No punkins though,
so can't be frost on the punkins today anyway.
Been looking at the jail roster and the DUII arrests or cited in the News-Times.
Every week or so there is quite a list of people driving under the influence.
Some say they are taking prescription medications. Well, that just doesn't cut it.
Read the label and it says do not drive or do any type of work that is hazardous.
A person does not have to be drinking alcohol to get a DUII. One can even
be cited for driving while tired. Anything that dulls one’s senses is a danger to
driving or doing dangerous work.
With as much publicity as there is about driving under the influence, it's
surprising, in a way, that so many still do. One faces the loss of the vehicle and
will most likely lose their driving privileges for 30 to 360 days or more.
In rural communities, it’s difficult to get around without a driver’s license, so
one drives anyway? Well, that can be a hefty fine on top of the existing fine for
driving in the first place.
The three DUIls in a lifetime, I am not sure about that but three is a magic
number. After three DUIls - that is the loss of the license for life. One can apply
after l() years. At this time, I don’t know what the success rate is for reinstatement.
Whatever the case, it’s time to think about alternatives to drinking and driving.
One thing - the most important - is don’t drink, period. If one does not drink
alcohol or use other mind-altering drugs, one cannot get a DUII. Well, suppose
we do drink - then what?
There seems to be magic in the bottle and the keys to a car, they do attract.
The safe thing then is have someone take care of the car keys. This also has its
drawbacks. When one gets to a certain point and wants to go somewhere else
there is going to be an argument about the keys, maybe even become violent -
that too can be a cause to become locked up.
Then there is the designated driver. That seems to work on the holidays, so it
should work at other times too. Have a designated driver, preferably one who
does not drink. Of course, I also have heard of the one most sober is the desig
nated driver. That is not the preferred way to go either. One could be stranded
out in nowhere and chances are one doesn’t know how they got there anyway.
The magic number is .08 to be intoxicated, but that is not so. One drink, one
ounce, does cause a slowdown of reflexes. Some are intoxicated at .05. One never
knows how drugs are going to affect them. Alcohol for sure is unpredictable.
When one’s body starts slowing down, it thinks the mind is doing OK and
one continues to drink or use and drive. Now one is in command of a 2,(XX)- or
3,000-pound missile and is very dangerous to others as well as to oneself.
One forgets that those mind-altering chemicals affect judgment. The first to
go, one does not have it. if so it’s several miles behind and takes a while to catch
up, if ever.
Is the risk worth it? I think not. Wake up in jail? What for? Hospital, what
happened? Anybody injured? I don't know. Where is the car?
No, drinking and driving is not worth the chance of accident, injury, jail,
loss of driver’s license, loss of employment, and possible prison. All this is hy
pothetical till it happens to someone. Then the “if’s” don't count.
Don't drink, use, smoke pot or any mind-altering chemical or combination
and drive. Hope everybody is around next month, free.
