SiletzTribal Charitable Contribution Fund
Advisory Board Recruitment
The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund Board is currently ac
cepting applications from Tribal members for a three-year appointment be
ginning June 2008 through May 201 1. Applications must be received before
May 31, 2008.
The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund Advisory Board is com
posed of seven members currently, including: Jessie Davis, Siletz Tribal Coun
cil representative; Cheryl Lane, Kathryn Dick and Kurt Arden. Siletz Tribal
members; Karen Gerttula and Mike Holden. non-Tribal members agreed upon
by the governor and Tribal chairman and approved by the Tribal Council;
and Jim White, non-Tribal member selected by the Tribal chairman and ap
proved by the Tribal Council, from a list submitted by the governor. The board
is composed of unpaid volunteers who receive travel reimbursement only for
attendance at meetings and distributions. Other public relations events are
also eligible for reimbursement.
The Advisory Board meets quarterly (January, April. July and October)
to review approximately 80 applications received from charitable organiza
tions or local governments within the Siletz Tribe's service area and Native
American entities or activities located anywhere in the United States for the
following purposes: education, health, public safety, gambling addiction,
prevention, drug and alcohol treatment, housing, the arts, the environment
and natural resource preservation, cultural activities, historic preservation,
and other charitable purposes. Tribal programs are not eligible to receive
contributions pursuant to the Distribution of Net Revenues Ordinances and
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State of Oregon and
the Siletz Tribe.

Applications must be submitted by May 31, 2008, to be considered for
appointment at the Regular Tribal Council meeting in June. If you have any

Siletz Constitutional Election
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Siletz Agency, will be conducting an election
to amend the Constitution of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Or
egon. This will be a federally conducted election, not a Tribal election. A
voters registration packet will be sent out to all Tribal members of voting age,
who will have to register to vote in this federal election, if you do not register
specially for this election, you will not be eligible to vote. A voters registration
form will be included in the voters registration packet. This notice is to inform
you of the federal election, the dates set for conducting the election and the
importance of registering specially for this election. The following dates have
been established for conducting the election:

April 11, 2008
April 15. 2008
April 16. 2008
May 5, 2008
May 16, 2008
Voters registration packet and registration forms sent to all
tribal members of voting age.
Registration forms must be postmarked or received by
the BIA Siletz Agency on or before this date. Registration
therefore closes at 4 p.m. on this date. If you do not regis
ter specially for this election, you will not be eligible.
The official list of registered voters will be posted in alpha
betical order on this date at various locations for review.
Ballots sent to all eligible registered voters. These ballots
must be returned to the BIA in the postage-paid return en
velopes provided.

Election Day. Ballots must be received by the BIA Siletz
Agency Office no later than noon on this day.

477 Self-Sufficiency Clients Receive
GEDs, Move into Work Force

The Siletz 477 Self-Sufficiency Program here in Siletz has been experienc
ing some transitional growth. We are happy to welcome LeiLani Cordova as the
new Tribal services specialist to our Siletz team. She is an asset because of her
friendly personality and pervious experience with the Tribe.
Tribal clients are required to do 26 hours of self-sufficiency activities a week
to overcome their barriers and move toward becoming self-sufficient. We are
happy to report that the majority of our clients are removing barriers to employ
ment on a monthly basis.
The past two months have been especially positive for clients who are work
ing toward self-sufficiency. More than half a dozen clients went into the work
force. Several clients successfully completed alcohol and drug treatment plans.
The program is very proud of the GED classroom in Siletz. Two SSP clients
received their GEDs last semester and each quarter other students are taking and
passing the tests that lead toward getting their diplomas.
A party was held in the classroom in March to recognize student efforts. The
program honored one of the graduates with a Tribal blanket and a gift certificate
for all of her hard work and effort.
Monthly Workshops
The Siletz team is hosting monthly workshops for its current clients or any
one who is interested in attending. In March, Job Training and Employment
Counselor Mark Pullam presented “Gorilla Tactics.” a workshop on effective
job hunting. It was well-attended and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Another workshop was held in late April on “Interviewing — How Io and
How Not To.” If you are interested in information about future workshops, please

The 477 Self-Sufficiency Program hosts a Job Fair at the Tribal Community
Center for openings at Chinook Winds Casino, the hotel and golf course. Partici
pants can fill out an application here in Siletz and be considered for positions
available at all three properties.
It's been very successful and participants have been hired at each fair. II you

Time Limit for Program
A small unknown fact that some of our clients need to be reminded of is the
time limit that families can be on the program. Federal regulation states there is
a lifetime time limit of 60 months.
Once a family has reached this limit, they are no longer eligible for the pro
gram. The parent(s) and children may still have needs, but federal law prohibits
further assistance from TANF funding after the 60 months.
This is especially challenging for our clients here in a rural area. At times, it might
seem that the caseworkers are pushing their clients, but they do so with the clients’
best interest at heart as they know the clock is ticking tor them and their families.
