    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
To the editor:
In this year of Restoration, I am so
grateful for the footprints my birth
mother left me that I might share as a
new member of a Proud People.
1 am coming to you in the hope that
someone will be able to help in my long
search for connection to my history
and lineage.
These are the only facts as I know them:
I was born full-term on Dec. 30,
1939, at approximately 12:15 p.m. at
a hospital in Sacramento, Calif. I
weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces.
My birth mother was 24 at the time
of my birth. She was % Norwegian, '4
Holland Dutch, and at least *4 Coos
To the editor:
The Olalla Center in Toledo would like to thank the Confederated Tribes of
Siletz Indians for the generous donation of $9,500 toward the roof repair at the
Olalla facility. This photo shows the workers from Sprick Roofing Company of
Corvallis during the September project.
The center serves Lincoln County School District children ages 3-13 and
recently opened the TYKE programs (Treatment for Youth in a Kindergarten
Environment) that provides services for preschool-aged children.
Thank you, Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund.
Sincerely,
Ray Burleigh, M.Ed.

Indian. She was 5 feet, 5 inches tall,
with dark hair and brown eyes.
My maternal grandmother was */2
Holland Dutch and '/a Coos Indian.
Records indicate she died of pneumo
nia prior to my birth.
My maternal grandfather was 52 at
the time of my birth and was of Nor
wegian descent.
At the time of my birth, my birth
mother had three siblings - a sister age
28, a brother age 26, and a younger
brother age 19.
My birth father was 42 or 43 and of
French, Scottish, and English descent.
My birth mother was a waitress and
my birth father was said to be a bus driver.
Although not married, my birth
mother and birth father already had two
children at the time of my birth - two
boys. My oldest brother was 2-4 years
old and the other 1 year of age.
I do not know if my birth father
stayed in the picture as he already had
a wife and two daughters at the time of
my birth. I do not know the ages of
my half-sisters.
Records show my birth mother kept
in touch with the California Children's
Home Society, checking on me until I
was adopted. At one point, she came
in to put my two brothers up for adop
tion also, but must have changed her
mind for she never returned. Her young
life must have been such a struggle.
I have been searching since 1989
when this information became avail
able to me.
My birth mother would be about
92 and her youngest brother about 86.
My full brothers would be about 70-
71 and 68-69 at this time.
Please, if you can help, my mailing
address is: P.O. Box 476; New Cuyama,
CA 93254-0476. I shall be forever
grateful.

To the editor:
Tribal Graduates
The Siletz Tribe has always placed education as one of our top priorities. We
have become one of the most progressive Tribes in our country because of the
outstanding leadership that education has provided us with. Our tribal members
understand the importance of support from family and friends to our young
students from pre-kindergarten through college.
At one time our Tribe only had a handful of college graduates. Today we
have over 100 students in college. This is something that has not happened in
30 years without a commitment from our whole Tribe and staff. Now we need to
celebrate that success.
College graduation should be one of the highlights of our entire year. Col
lege graduations should become one of our biggest celebrations. Our graduates
should be introduced at our restoration celebration as some of our most honored
guests.
Graduation is not just about the individual but the entire family and friends
as well. Let’s start giving it the status that it deserves.
