It seems to have been an above-
average season for the fresh fruits, espe
cially peaches. We have had some beau
tiful cases of peaches and they don’t last
long. Our clients love this time of year.
Remember, if you would like to
come in and demonstrate your creative
cooking skills with commodity foods,
let us know, send us the recipe and we
will get the nutritionist to break it down
into the format we need for our pro
gram. We still have incentives to give out.

On June 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
the combined programs of 477-Self-
Sufficiency and Healthy Family,
Healthy Child Project had a Family
Wellness Night for clients and family
members at Harmony Lanes in Toledo.
Kids and adults alike put on bowl
ing shoes and grabbed rented bowling
balls, enjoying a fun evening that pro
moted healthy family activities. There
were 22 participants in the event and
everyone had positive words to say
about the night.
Food and beverages were provided
by a generous donation from Subway of
Newport and Pepsi Cola Bottling Com
pany. We would like to thank Harmony
Lanes, Subway and Pepsi for making
the Family Wellness Night a success.
At the end of the evening, the par
ticipants made suggestions for future
Family Wellness activities.
CERT Training Class to Start
The Siletz Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) latest training
classes will begin in September at the
Siletz Fire Hall.
The CERT program’s goals are to
promote emergency preparedness, de
velop skills to respond to and cope with
the aftermath of a disaster, and develop
neighborhood self-sufficiency before,
during and after a natural or manmade
disaster. Topics taught and completed by
the participants included disaster pre
paredness, disaster fire suppression, di
saster medical operations, light search
and rescue, terrorism, disaster psychol
ogy, CERT organization and the final drill.
CERT graduates now have the
knowledge, skills and abilities to not
only help their family be better pre
pared for emergencies, but to assist
their neighborhood in becoming bet
ter prepared to take action when Siletz
or tribal housing is threatened by a
major emergency or disaster.
CERT members will maintain and
refine their skills by participating in ex
ercises and activities. They can attend
supplemental training opportunities
offered by the Siletz Fire, Lincoln County
Emergency Services Department and
the Toledo Police Department.
For information, contact Dean Saw
yer at 541-444-8298 or 1-800-922-1399,
ext. 1298; or deans@ctsi.nsn.us.
