Congratulations, Cole! Cole is the
son of Steve and Fonda Jackson and
grandson of Elouise Case. Cole gradu­
ated from Rainier High school as a
scholar athlete and salutatorian with a
3.9 GPA.
He played basketball and baseball
for four years and received a varsity
letter in basketball for three years and
baseball for two. In his senior year of
basketball, he broke the school assist
record with 141 and averaged 16 points
a game.
In baseball, he played shortstop
and batted second. He was named sec­
ond team all-league in both sports his
senior year and both teams made it to
the first round of state.
He also was voted an all-star for
the Lower Columbia College and the
Oregon Athletic Basketball Coaches
Association.
Cole graduated with the following
honors, awards and scholarships: Sa­
lutatorian, Oregon Honors Diploma,
CIM award in five areas of study, Na­
tional Honor Society member (two
years), Scholar Athlete (four years),
Honor Roll (four years), Student of the
Month (four years), President’s Educa­
tion Award, OASSA Honor Team
Health/Physical Ed, English Depart­
ment Most Improved, Outstanding
Math Student, 2006-07 second team all-
league basketball, 2005-06 Honorable
Mention all-league basketball, 2006-07
Second Team all-league baseball, Chris
Binder Memorial Basketball Award,
Linfield Trustee and Diversity Schol­
arships and the Rainier Booster Club
Scholarship.
Cole will attend Linfield College and
double major in business administra­
tion and athletic training. He also will
play basketball for the Linfield Wildcats.
We are so proud of you, Cole, and
know you will continue your success
in college and life. You are such a bless­
ing and we thank God for you every day!

Loris and Calvin VanPelt stand with Tina Retasket, who wrapped Calvin in a
Pendleton blanket upon his receipt of an Outstanding Alumni Achievement
Award from Pacific University at the Alumni Honors Gala in June. This award
recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to their community’
or profession. Calvin began his career as an export trainee with Jantzen Inc.
and eventually became manager of its international division. He then held
executive positions at Columbia Exporters, White Stag, Sea-Pac International
and Martin Sales International. He also worked more than 20 years to
establish the World Trade Center in Portland. He serves on the
Alumni Board of Directors and several other community-based boards,
foundations and committees.
St. John Completes First Year as
Ironworker’s Apprentice
Congratulations to
Alana St. John, who is a
graduate of the Oregon
tradeswomen program in
Portland and now is em­
ployed at Columbia Wire
and Iron, working as an
ironworker’s apprentice.
She is one of two
women to ever join the
Local 516 ironworker’s
apprenticeship program.
When she started in Oc­
tober 2006, she was the
only woman working in
Alana St. John
the shop.
“A lot of the jobs I do are challenging mentally and physically, but this is the
best job I’ve ever had,” says Alana.
The apprenticeship is a four-year program and Alana already has completed
the first year. After completing all four years, she will be a mechanic and certi-
fied welder.
