This year’s Smokin’ at the Ocean
Barbecue & Brew Fest returns to Chi­
nook Winds on July 13-15.
Sanctioned by the Western BBQ
Association, Smokin’ at the Ocean is
Oregon's barbecue state championship
with more than $1 (),()()() in cash and
prizes up for grabs. Patrick Lamb and
Deep South will provide live music in
the Brew Fest beer garden. The return
of the nationally sanctioned national
rib eating contest rounds out a fun-
packed family weekend.
Regional competitive eaters and
fans of this sport can heave a sigh of
relief. The nationally sanctioned Com­
petitive Rih Eating Championship,
with a top prize of $1,500, is back. And
like last year, locals can earn a chance
to battle the experts by competing in
the regional amateur eating contest.

There are those who believe they
could eat enough barbecue to win
some of the more than $2,500 in cash
prizes available in the sanctioned rib
eating competition. The IFOCE is al­
ways looking for the next competitive
Gift Shop - All receipts that have a
7 in the total amount
Deli - All receipts that have a 7 in
the total amount
Buffet - Every guest from 7 a.m. to
7 p.m. (only patrons 21 and older)
Rogue River Room/hotel restau­
rants - Every entrée ordered (21
and older only)
Room Stay - All guests who check
in or out on July 7; one ticket per
guest in the room (over 21)
Play Palace: Every child dropped
off between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Every round of golf played
Every paid hour on the golf simulator
Daily sweeps, includes slots, table
games, bingo and keno
eating sensation and encourages every­
one interested to participate in the
Amateur Rih Eating Competition.
The first 15 to sign up on July 14 by
5 p.m. can participate. The $20 entry fee
(donated to a local charity) includes a
commemorative shirt for the participant.
The top four winners will take on
2006 champion Joey Chestnut and
other eaters like Richard and Carlene
LaFevre from the International Federa­
tion of Competitive Eaters Association
(IFOCE) on July 15 at 3 p.m. Chestnut
is currently the No. 2 competitive eater
in the world.
A special competition with members
of the media will take place at 2 p.m. on
July 14. Chin<x)k Winds will donate to the
chosen charity of the top three winners.
With more than $10,000 in cash
and prizes, barbecue cooks win big at
Smokin' at the Ocean. Proceeds from
the event will be donated to the Taft
High School Culinary Class.
There is no charge for admission
to attend this family event. There is an
entry fee to participate in all competi­
tions. More information on the
