How to Develop Good Employees
If you are a business owner, you
might have discovered that one of the
most difficult things you have to do is
find and keep good employees.
Employees - whether they are part-
time, seasonal, or full-time - are one
of the most important assets your busi
ness has.
Attracting and developing good
employees isn't always easy, particu
larly in our local market that is based
on tourism and the service industry,
where many businesses are looking for
the same type of person to hire.
Many small business owners can’t
afford to pay high salaries and offer ben
efits to their employees, so it’s extremely
important that you as the employer pro
vide a safe, comfortable environment
for your employees to work in.
Respect for your employees and
the job they do for your business is also
very important. If you don’t respect
them, they probably won’t respect you
or your business.
Business owners also must lead by
example and show their employees how
they would like their customers to be
treated. Remember, many people have
not been raised in nurturing, caring
environments and have never been
taught how to treat people. As an em
ployer, it’s your job to provide that
training.
Be as flexible as you can with em
ployees’ schedules. If they have an
emergency or a child care issue, they
will appreciate it and it’s a great way to
develop loyalty to you and your business.
Provide training opportunities if
possible and show your employees
that you believe in them and want them
to improve themselves and become
successful.
If you treat your employees well,
your reputation as a business owner
will soon become known in the com
munity and people will want to come
and work for you.
In the long run, this will eliminate
your need to search for employees when
you have an opening and your current
employees will want to stay with you.
Look around your community.
Many businesses have long-term em
ployees who may have worked for the
company for several years. People stay
on jobs where they are treated well,
respected, and valued.
How does your company measure
up? It might be time for you to change
the way you do things and make your
employees feel good about helping you
and your business to be successful!
