    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
To the editor:
Our Siletz Tribal people called me to
come and bless the acquisition of the 18-
hole golf course in Lincoln City. I ac
cepted and came up with my daughter,
Nadine Martin.
I didn’t want to do this around all the
people who came that day, but to do the
blessings in a quiet way. I blessed the golf
course from the four directions and came
back and blessed the golf course office.
What an honor it is to serve our
people in this spiritual way. I thank our
Creator in the strides our tribe has come
over the years.
Thanks to all.

To the editor:
My name is Fredrick Hostler and I
am a Siletz Tribal elder. Recently my wife
and I had the pleasure of going on our
first outing with the elders to Mt. Hood.
We spent the night in a hotel and the
next day went on the Mt. Hood Brunch
Train Ride. We just want to compliment
Angela Ramirez for the outstanding job
she did to pull this together.
We could see that it takes a lot of plan
ning for something to come off as smooth
as it did and we just want to publicly say
thank you for all the effort you put into
this trip. We had a wonderful time.
Thank you, Angela.
To the editor:
Waldport Junior League Baseball
would like to thank the Siletz Tribal Chari
table Contribution Fund for their generous
donation to our summer sports program.
WJLB was nearly to the point of dis
solving due to several years of misman
agement. A new group of volunteers took
over the program for the 2005 season.
The fantastic efforts of fund-raising
and obtaining local sponsorships, com
bined with the generous grant from the
Siletz contribution fund, allowed the pro
gram to take a giant leap in the right di
rection. WJLB was able to purchase
much-needed equipment, fabulous uni
forms, supplies to maintain the ball fields,
and supplies to finish the construction of
the league’s concession stand.
The program had over 125 children
ages 4-12 participating in the 2005 sea
son, which was over double from the pre
vious year.
WJLB would also like to thank all the
local business that donated money and
supplies to our program. A special thanks
to all the volunteers who donated their
time and efforts to make our 2005 pro
gram a success.
Without the Siletz Tribal grant, our
season would not have been nearly as
successful. Thank you for supporting and
caring about our local youth.
Thanks again,
Darby Mabe

To the editor:
It’s been a pleasure being Miss
Haskell 2005-2006. Since being crowned
this past May, I have attended 65 events
so far. Among these are pow-wows; con
ferences; Haskell activities; Student Sen
ate, University Council, and Homecom
ing Committee meetings; and Pageant
2006 fund-raising events.
I'd like to thank my parents, Thomas
and Marlene Stuart, for sponsoring my
trip to the Miss NCAI (National Congress
of American Indians) Pageant in Tulsa,
Okla, (approximately $300). Thanks to
Tim Stuart, Lynette Hibdon, Melvin
Ashue, Heidi Hibdon, Mike Wisdom,
Rich Wisdom, Jake Wisdom, and Haskell
Brave - Elliott Bryant - for helping me.
All of you have done countless things for
me as Miss Haskell that I can never repay.
A highlight of this semester was at
tending the NIEA (National Indian Edu
cation Association) Conference in Den
ver, Colo. I made it a personal goal to at
tend this conference. I saved about $ 1,000
just for myself to attend (ending cost ap
proximately $1,300).
I met hundreds of people, telling them
about Haskell Indian Nations University,
the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians,
and Kansas tribes. I’m proud to talk about
my school, tribe, and home.
I attended workshops on Native
American-based curriculum and teaching
with Native American children. These
workshops will help me in college and
my career as a teacher.
I’d like to thank Toni Lee Tsa-Toke
(NIEA student board member. Haskell
graduate, previous Miss Haskell. Kiowa);
Lillian Sparks (NIEA executive director
and past Miss Indian World); and Lillie
and Reggie Butler (Confederated Tribes
of Siletz Indians Tribal Council members)
for their help during the NIEA conference.
This semester, 1 willingly sponsored
Native American arts classes: dentalium
and dream catchers. 1 applied to the Siletz
Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund for
$683 and they granted the funds for Na
tive American arts classes. Shawls,
beadwork, and chokers will be taught next
semester. Thanks to the Confederated
Tribes of Siletz Indians for understand

To the editor:
To all our tribal members,
1 want to share with you what hap
pened to me over the weekend when I
decided to go to a Catholic rummage sale.
I was browsing the tables and looked
down to see a Chinook Winds blue cof
fee mug. I was so excited.
When I took it up to pay for it, the
woman asked me why I was so excited. I
told her it was wonderful to know some
one clear from Doniphan, Missouri, went
to our casino. The woman corrected me
and said oh you mean you went to that
casino for a visit.
I told her no, our tribe owns the ca
sino. And she corrected me again and said
you mean you visited the casino too.
I told her again no, as in we own it. 1
am a Siletz Indian. She got more excited
than I. She said how wonderful to be a
part of something so big. I told her yes, 1

was very proud of our tribe and we have
come a long way.
So someone tell Chinook Winds their
advertising is paying off. We are known
clear back here in Missouri!

To the editor:
To tribal members and Tribal Council,
We (Scott family) do not support the
Aaron Bennett family in his case. There
were false statements made at a Regular
Tribal Council meeting in September,
stating that we as Tyrone’s family sup
ported them.

ing that Haskell students need to be ex
posed to Native American arts.
Highlights for next semester, Spring
2006, include attending the AIHEC
(American Indian Higher Education Con
sortium) Conference in Green Bay, Wis.
(March); preparing for the Miss Haskell
and Haskell Brave Pageant (April); pre
paring for my giveaway (May); and at
tending Haskell events (welcome back
pow-wows, convocation, scholarship cer
emony, basketball games, plays, giving
tours, graduations, etc.).
I have truly enjoyed representing
Haskell Indian Nations University, the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians,
and my family. Please keep me in your
thoughts and prayers. I pray that our God
above will bless the next half of my reign
as Miss Haskell.

tend an event, please contact me at
