    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Miss Haskell, Tiffany Stuart; Billy Mills; and Haskell Brave, Eliott Bryant
Shane “Two-Feathers” Martin and his drum
To the editor:
I would like to express my gratitude
to the Dancing Again Singers and to
Reggie Butler Jr.
I have been working on my drum for
the last three years, having finished the
physical construction only a few days
before the Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow. The
final and most important step, being
drummed by my brothers and sisters of
the Siletz Nation, was all that remained.
To the editor:
I am asking for your support in my
decision to run for a position on our 2006
Tribal Council.
There are so many important issues
that need attention, to name a few: clinic
health care (traditional/holistic), out-of
service-area benefits.
Tribal Council term limit, tribal gam
ing - remand policy prohibiting presence
of tribal members at board of directors
(BOD) meeting, conflict for Tribal Council
to serve as casino BOD, abstinence/so
briety when representing our tribal opera-
tions/government while in travel status.
Housing services/programming for
residents, fair/equitable application of
tribal policies and disciplinary action,
real-time broadcast of Tribal Council
meetings with seven-day online response
to questions from membership via
Internet Web site, economic development.

I contacted Reggie and on short no
tice, he agreed to have the Dancing Again
Singers drum during the pow-wow. This
was an emotional and spiritual experience
for me.
1 wish to thank all who helped me with
this final step. This experience will be one
of the most cherished of my memories.
Eternally grateful,
Shane “Two-Feathers” Martin
No comps for serving as casino BOD
(tickets, etc.) as this can influence elec
tion voting, law enforcement, transitional
programming (prison/jail) for men, elders
care facility.
Ensure we follow our Tribal Consti
tution ... “Promote our cultural and reli
gious beliefs” (#3); “Help our members
achieve their highest potentials in educa
tion, physical and mental health, and eco
nomic development” (#4); “Insure that
our people shall live in peace and har
mony among themselves and with all
other peoples” (#8).
We need to be proactive to address
illegal drug use and addiction plaguing
our members.
Tribal Council members should have
a term limit. Creation of a separate en

October 2005
To the editor:
After being crowned Miss Haskell in
May 2005, I knew I would have a busy
year ahead of me.
This summer while in Siletz. 1 had
the privilege of attending the Siletz Me
morial Day Celebration, Pi-Ume-Sha
Warm Springs Pow-Wow, Grand Ronde
Veteran’s Pow-Wow, and the Nesika
Illahee Pow-Wow. I would like to thank
my Aunt Vai and Uncle Larry Hibdon for
opening their home to me.
When I came back to Haskell after the
Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow, 1 had the chance
to speak to the Haskell College freshman
class. I was the master of ceremonies for
the freshman orientation event.
Haskell Brave Eliott Bryant (Navajo),
and I have attended seven events since we
have been back in Kansas. The events are
as follows: Sac and Fox Pow-Wow, In
dian Council of Many Nations Pow-Wow,
Billy Mills speaking on the Haskell cam
pus, Haskell Game Night, Haskell Indian
Art Market, Haskell Convocation, and
Haskell Welcome Back Pow-Wow.
We also are attending Haskell Student
Senate meetings, University Council
meetings, and then our respective club
meetings. We have been working hard at
the Haskell Food Booth Concession
Stand, where 10 percent of the profit from
each concession stand we work is put into
the Haskell Royalty account.
We are fund-raising for the Miss
Haskell and Haskell Brave Pageant in
April 2006. We will work about 10 foot
ball games this semester if weather permits.
Events this fall semester that 1 am
scheduled to attend are as follows:
Haskell Boxing Tournament (Oct. 1);
National Indian Education Association
Conference in Denver, Colo. (Oct. 5-9);
Haskell homecoming events (Oct. 17-21);
Haskell Halloween carnival (Oct. 31);
Haskell honor roll assembly (Nov. 16);
Haskell fall graduation; and all the respec
tive campus meetings.
Please take the time to pray for Haskell
Brave Eliott Bryant and me for safety
during our travels and our academics.
Thanks to my parents - Thomas and
Marlene Stuart, Heidi Hibdon (cousin),
Lynette Hibdon (cousin, AKA Tiffany's
photographer), Melvin Ashue, Mike Wis
dom, and Eliott Bryant for the support you
all have given to me so far in my reign as
Miss Haskell.

The development of the Lincoln City

disappointed that a decision was made to

tribal members!

with ability to ask and have questions an
swered in a timely manner.
It is my opinion that our tribal orga
nization has failed to be consistent in en
forcing policies. I long for a time when
we were honest in our representation of
the facts.
When we make mistakes, we should
be upf ront and accountable for those ac
tions, rather than keeping it “confiden
tial.” If we make a mistake, we can make
a choice to admit, deny, or cover it up. When
we are open and honest, we can ask for
help and support to find a solution. That
kind of behavior is commendable.
Please know that I am committed to
being available and welcome questions or
feedback you may have regarding my
position on these subjects.
