Tribes of Siletz Indians
Bring Your Family to the Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow
Many different tribal nations will be
represented at the annual Nesika lllahee
Pow-Wow on Aug. 12-14,2005, in Siletz,
Ore., held by the Confederated Tribes of
Siletz Indians. This family fun event is a
tradition for the Siletz people and other
American Indians.
The celebration will start with the
crowning of the 2005-2006 Siletz Roy
alty on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. All dance styles
will enter the arena at 7 p.m. at the first
Grand Entry. Dances in which the public
can participate that are non-competitive
will follow the Grand Entry.
This year’s pow-wow is in honor of
Craig Whitehead (1959-2004). He was
the Siletz Head Man Dancer for nearly
10 years, was the pow-wow coordinator
for the tribe, and served as president of
the school board for Siletz Valley School.
Craig’s work with the Siletz Tribe and
iiis involvement with Native and non
Native communities will be reflected on
at this event.
A parade with a patriotic theme winds
through downtown Siletz at 10 a.m. on
Aug. 13. This hometown parade with nos
talgic small-town atmosphere includes
tribal royalty, drummers, dancers, eques
trian units, vintage cars, and floats.

ing up a registration form at the Siletz
Tribal administration building, 201 SE
Swan Ave. in Siletz, or contacting Mona

morning of the parade at 8 a.m. at the
Siletz Tribal administration building. If

at 9 a.m. You can, however, still partici
pate in the parade.
The parade is followed by a Grand
Entry at 1 p.m. Competition dancing for
youth and teens takes place in the after
noon. Competition dancing continues af
ter the 7 p.m. Grand Entry with adult cat
egories and the finals for youth and teens.
On Aug. 14. the final day of the pow
wow, a Grand Entry takes place at noon.
This session will end with awards for the
Golden Age, adult, teen, and youth category
winners. Prizes range from $25 to $500.
A free shuttle will be available from
various parking lots in Siletz to the
Pauline Ricks Memorial Pow-Wow
Grounds on Government Hill. Parking is
extremely limited at the pow-wow grounds;
the shuttle is the best way to get there.
A variety of food and Native arts and
crafts and jewelry will be offered for sale
by about 50 vendors at tfie pow-wow.
This alcohol- and drug-free event is
free. Listen carefully to the pow-wow
emcee, who will tell you when you can
and when you should not take photos. The
emcee also will explain the significance
of the events taking place in the area
throughout the pow-wow.
Join the Siletz Tribe and other Ameri
can Indians at the pow-wow - a time to
celebrate life and friendship.
