Advertising - Why Do I Need It and What Kind
is Most Effective?
Advertising is the key to success for
most businesses. If potential customers
don’t know about you, they can’t use your
product or services.
Unfortunately, many new business
owners neglect to develop an advertising
plan and budget, and often end up in
volved in expensive long-term advertis
ing contracts that don’t really benefit their
businesses.
The type of advertising you need
depends on the size of your business,
the number of competitors you have, and
your budget.
Although many types of advertising
programs are available, it’s beneficial to
new business owners to start out slowly
until the success of their advertising meth
ods can be determined.
Remember, if you feel radio, televi
sion, or newspaper advertising would be
effective for your business, compare prices,
length of contract, and how many poten
tial customers you can expect to reach.
One of the most inexpensive ways to
advertise is to distribute flyers. They can
be given to current customers and distrib
uted to potential customers in a variety
of ways.
If you plan to distribute flyers, be sure
and check with city and county ordi
nances to make sure there aren’t any re
strictions. Don't put flyers on cars in
shopping centers. This type of distribu
tion can lead to complaints of broken
windshield wipers and littering and give
your business a bad name.
One of the best forms of advertising
is “word of mouth” coming from satis
fied customers. Make sure that each cus
tomer has a good experience and wants
to tell everyone about your business.

Fifty-three Siletz elders attended the
annual Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw,
and Coquille Tribes’ Elder Honor Day.
On March 17, the elders traveled from
Siletz, Portland, Salem, and Eugene to
The Mill Casino in Coos Bay, Ore. They
stayed at the Mill Casino Hotel.
The activities started with a luncheon
hosted by the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and
Siuslaw Tribe. After lunch during the
break, they had a bingo reception at the
tribal office in Coos Bay. Several elders
joined in the fun and played bingo.
Delores Ben won the grand prize, a hand
made flute made by Howard Roy.
Dinner was later that evening and
Siletz reigned over the activities with
Gloria Stott crowned as queen and John
Roe Jr. as king.
They received many gifts, including
a Pendleton shawl for Gloria and a
Pendleton blanket for John. The Coquille
Tribe hosted the dinner. Everyone re
ceived a gift and the food was great.
The next day, we attended the break
fast before heading home. On the way
home, the Portland van broke down by
the elk reserve near Reedsport. The trans
porters made a great effort to deal with
the situation and everyone eventually
made it home.
We always enjoy going to Coos Bay
to attend the gathering and look forward
to next year.
