Time to Gather Basket-Making
Materials
Spring is here and very soon hazel
sticks will be ready to pick and peel.
Hazel stick gathering is a must for
anyone interested in making traditional
Siletz baskets. Spruce root can be dug all
year round and is used for the weavers or
weft of Siletz baskets.
Bear grass and maidenhair fern are
used for overlay to make our traditional
designs or marks in our baskets and both
are picked in late summer.
Any tribal members interested in gath­
ering can call Bud Lane at 1 -800-922-1399,

Basket materials must be gathered in
a timely fashion. Here is a general break­
down of gathering times for different
items:

enhair fern
August

Apply Now for Siletz Royalty
The Pow-Wow Committee in taking
applications for this year's Royalty con­
testants. The categories are as follows:
Little Miss Siletz - 7-12 years old
Jr. Miss Siletz -13-17 years old
Miss Siletz - 18-24 years old
Young women interested in running
in one of these categories should contact
Nick Sixkiller of Felicia Carmona for
an application.
The deadline to get applications to the
Pow-Wow Committee is July 2, 2005.
Any applications turned in between July 6
and July 15 will be accepted only with
approval of the Pow-Wow Committee. All
applications turned in after July 15 will
not be accepted for this year.
Contestants will be judged on their
knowledge of tribal and family history,
poise and personality, speaking ability,
dance ability in both Feather Dance and
intertribal styles, and ticket sales.
Each contestant will receive a com­
mission on the number of tickets that she
sells. Commission rates are as follows:
200 to 500 at 20 percent, 501 to 1,000
at 25 percent, and more than 1,000 at
30 percent.
The pageant is scheduled for Aug. 11,
2005, and the winners will be crowned
before the first grand entry on Aug. 12.
This year’s royalty will be sponsored
to attend the Gathering of Nations Pow-
Wow in Albuquerque, N.M., and Miss
Siletz also will be sponsored to partici­
pate in the National Congress of Ameri­
can Indians (NCAI) competition.

July 26-28, 2005 - Siletz, Oregon
Culture Camp will begin this year on
July 26 and end on July 28. Camp will be
held at the Siletz Tribal Community Cen­
ter and pow-wow grounds.
Culture Camp is for tribal families
and children under age 10 must have an
adult chaperone.
Camp planning meetings are under
way and suggested activities include
basketweaving, hand drum-making
demonstration, drumstick making,
beadworking, shell necklace making, tra­
ditional foods preparation, flintknapping,
storytelling, fish T-shirt painting, mocca­
sin making, and recreational activities.
Overnight camping is available for
families that live outside of the Siletz area.
Tipis are available as well. We have a lim­
ited amount of tipis; they are first-come,
first-served. To reserve a tipi, please con-
tact Selene Rilatos at 541-444-8246 or
1-800-922-1399, ext. 1246.
Participants should bring tents, sleep­
ing bags, toiletries, etc. Campers can ar­
rive on July 25; however, meals are not
provided on this day.
Registration forms will be available
in the June issue of Siletz News or at your
local area office.
We are having a T-shirt art contest.
Entries can be mailed or dropped off at
the Cultural Office.

T-shirt contest is June 15, 2005.

Rogue this year.
We are looking at
different ideas for a new
T-shirt design to be used
for many Run to the
Rogue items. Ideas the
committee would like to
see are the tribe's bas­
ketry patterns, Run to
the Rogue’s flicker/
eagle feather staff, and
a map of the run.

Dance Sponsors Needed
The Pow-Wow Committee is looking
for dance sponsors for this year’s Nesika
lllahee Pow-Wow.
When you sponsor a category, your
name will be on the winner’s envelope
and will be read during the awarding of
prize money to the dancers.
Dance categories include both male/
female traditional, fancy, grass, jingle,
round bustle, golden age, and women’s
basket cap.
You can sponsor, or co-sponsor with
the committee, a category in your name,
your family’s name, or in the memory of
a loved one.
