Clayton Wins Elder Storyteller Contest
by Kathryn Dick
While attending the National Coun
cil on Aging Conference in Milwaukee,
Wis., Eva Clayton went to a storytelling
workshop. Little did she know that she
would be the first one to tell a story.
She was standing in the back of a
crowded room when it was decided that
the group would move to a larger room.
This meant she would end up in the
front of the bigger room.
The workshop was a storytelling
contest. Being interested in writing and
stories, Eva went to this workshop merely
to hear the stories that would be told.
Once there, they couldn’t get anyone
to start the workshop by telling a story.
Finally Eva, being the kind person
she is, offered to start. As she made her
way to the front of the room, she had to
quickly come up with a story to tell.
She told a story in honor of her
mother, Jeannette Giddings. The story
was one of when she was a child and,
along with her nine siblings, was walk
ing through the woods with her mother.
It included all the things her mother had
taught them as they walked.

It must have been a good story be
cause in the end, after 20-some stories,
Eva won first place. She will tell her
story at the Elder Council meeting on
Oct. 9.
For her first-place finish, she won
a Pendleton blanket. Congratulations,
Eva! You did us proud!
Elders Enter Nesika lllahee Parade
The elders once again had their
annual float in the Nesika lllahee Pow-
Wow Parade this year.
Maxine Rilatos was in charge of the
float. Gladys Bolton was the grand mar
shal of the 2004 parade, honored as the
outgoing whip woman.
Several elders took part and rode on
the float. Others offered their services
to the veterans, such as Donna Woods,
who drove her unique PT Cruiser with
her husband, Warren Woods, a veteran.
PT Cruisers were used to drive the
veterans who could not walk the dis
tance. The elders had a great time and
received a Culture Award for their float.

Elders Travel to NICOA Conference
by Kathryn Dick
Thirty-nine elders attended the
National Council on Aging Conference
in Milwaukee, Wis. They traveled with
the two tribal elder coordinators,
Kathryn Dick and Angela Ramirez.
The elders left Oregon in the wee
hours of the morning, meeting at the Port
land Airport for the flight to Milwaukee.
It was a great trip in which 300
tribes were represented. Various work
shops were held, plus a dinner pow-wow
one evening and the next afternoon,
a fashion luncheon that consisted of
elders modeling their tribal regalia.
They also had a prayer breakfast early
Sunday morning for those who wanted
to attend.
The conference ended with a cau
cus meeting of each region. Ours is the
Portland region, which consists of tribes
from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and
Alaska. A new representative from our
region was elected to a four-year term,
James Delacruz from Washington.
It was great to attend the confer
ence and see the many friends we have
met at past conferences and new ones
we met on this trip.
