LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
To the editor:
My wife, Delores, and I had the
opportunity to attend the dedication
of the World War II Memorial in
Washington, D.C., on May 29, 2004.
We attended with five other WWII
tribal veterans.
We would like to give special thanks
to our tribe for making this possible. I
am proud to be a member of a tribe that
offered this opportunity to all surviving
Siletz Tribal WWII veterans.
It would be both selfish and foolish
for me to think the tribe was sending
me to honor only myself. I take pride
in knowing that I went representing all
Siletz Tribal members honored by the
memorial. The memorial had special
meaning for my wife Delores since her
uncle Jack Sanderson was a Japanese
prisoner of war for three years.
Thanks to Dee and Bud for all the
help and assistance extended to us.
Without their help, traveling around
Washington would have been difficult.
Thank you Sis Bolton, Rose Bremner,
and Al Lane and family for permitting
us to tag along for two days. Special
thanks to the Lane family for honoring
all the tribal veterans with an eagle
feather at our briefing breakfast.
I am happy that, at age 76,1 had the
opportunity to walk the same ground
and offer silent prayers at the same
locations my parents walked and prayed
when my father was 76 years old and
made his visit to our nation’s capital.

To the editor:
I wish to express my gratitude to
the Tribal Council and to all tribal
members for making it possible for me
and my grandson, Peter, to attend the
dedication of the National World War
II Memorial.
While in Washington, D.C., we
were also able to visit the Korean War
and Vietnam War memorials. I had
served during each of these three wars
and to visit the memorials had great
meaning to me.
Thanks again,
Ken Hatch

To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity
to express the appreciation of the Siletz
Valley Friends of the Library for the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians’
support and pledge of $ 100,000 toward
building a new public library in Siletz.
The current library building is
severely deteriorating with dry rot and
is too small to meet our community’s
needs. The new library building will
offer a place for group and individual
activities, displays of artwork and col
lections, and information about employ
ment opportunities and local events.
To the editor:
It is always an honor to prepare the
Memorial Day meal for our veterans
and to honor those who have fought for
our country, those who gave their lives,
and those who have gone before us.
I would like to take the time on behalf
of the Culture Committee to thank all
those individuals who worked so tire
lessly to help with this event. We would
like to thank and acknowledge Dino
Butler, Mona Hudson, Kris Whitehead,
Bonnie Crawford, Kathy Robinson,
Sherry Rilatos, Mary Dederick, Anita
Espino, Jason Martin-Vaughan, Rick
Leaton, Reggie Butler Jr., Robert
Kentta, Jane John, and Lisa Brown.
I especially want to thank Aggie
Baker Pilgrim and Sam Lynch for all
the extra help and time that you have
for the people. Aggie, Sam, and I put in
over 30 hours to shop, pick up the
salmon, and prepare the meal for this
day and I couldn’t have done it without
you gals!
A special thank you also to
Chinook Winds Casino staff members
Jack McDaniels and Roger Coddington
for the excellent salmon donated for
the meal.

Culture Committee/Staff Rep.
A program room will be available
for classes, meetings, and social activities.
The new library will be a great resource
for the students at Siletz Valley School
and will send a message to the children
of our community that we value them
and encourage them to learn. The new
building will benefit our whole
community in many ways.
The follow paragraphs are
excerpted from the letter of thanks I sent
on May 29 to Chairman Pigsley and the
CTSI Tribal Council:
“On behalf of the Siletz Valley
Friends of the Library, I extend sincere
thanks to the Confederated Tribes of
Siletz Indians for your commitment to
the Siletz Library building project.
“The Confederated Tribes of Siletz
Indians’ substantial pledge of $100,000
and letter of support will be extremely
valuable in encouraging charitable
foundations to invest funds in our
capital campaign.
“Thank you again for supporting
building a new library. I am looking
forward to working together on this
valuable addition to our community.”
I am grateful for the strong show
of community support by the Con
federated Tribes of Siletz Indians.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sally Jennings
President
