Elders’ Woodcut
a Success; More
Wood Available
The elders’ woodcut held in April
by the Natural Resources Committee
went very well! Thirty-five volunteers
cut 10° cords of wood and delivered it
to 18 elders in the Siletz area. Elders
still are on the waiting list.
A Portland contractor, Don Adams,
will donate 75 trees to the elders for
firewood. This wood will be cut up after
it has been delivered and disbursed as
soon as possible.
If you’re an elder who didn’t
receive wood from the woodcut, the site
has been opened to all tribal members.
The Natural Resources Department is
issuing woodcut permits.
Please call Natural Resources at
541-444-8232 or 1-800-922-1399,
ext. 1232, to get a wood cutting permit
before all the wood is gone!
Van Peters, principal of Siletz Valley School, received the 2004 Outstanding
Administrator of the Year award from the Oregon Indian Education Association.
He’s shown here with Patty Savage-Socha, who’s received the OIEA Educator
of the Year award twice, and the late Craig Whitehead, school board president.
Volunteers cut and get ready to haul wood to waiting elders during the elders’
woodcut in April.

USDA staff will attend the National Conference of Food Distribution Programs
on Indian Reservations on June 14-18, so it’ll be very important to keep your
scheduled appointments this month because we’ll be gone for a whole week. The
conference is in Green Bay, Wis., and we hope to bring back some good, useful
information to improve the quality of our food program.
In the meantime ... happy meals!
Gladys Bolton, Bonnie Petersen, and Maria Westervelt attend the Northwest
Indian Housing Association quarterly meeting in Boise, Idaho, in May.
