Free Sunday Concerts by the Sea Continue
Sundays are traditionally a time for
lounging and enjoying the day, and
what better way to relish the day than
with a free concert.
On one Sunday each month, Chinook
Winds Casino & Convention Center
will present a live concert that’s free to
the public and open to all ages. All
concerts in this series begin at 2 p.m.
in the Chinook Winds Convention Center.
Each performance will be from a
Western Oregon University musical
group of students and staff. To say
thanks to the school, Chinook Winds
will donate to that group’s fund-raising
foundation.
The first of the Sunday Concerts by
the Sea series was held April 18 with
the 20-piece Western Hemisphere Or
chestra. The Chinook Winds donation
generated from this event will help the
band record an end-of-the-year CD.
On May 23, the second Sunday
concert will feature the 45-member
Western Symphony Orchestra. Winner
of this year’s concerto competition, this
fine group will accompany fantastic
student soloists from around the state.
The donation from this concert will
help cover costs associated with the
orchestra’s year-end performance.
Before WOU’s July and August
summer break, the Early Music Consort
will appear June 20. This collection of
instrumentalists and vocalists will
perform music from 16th century Spain,
including Diego Ortiz; 17th century
Germany, including Heinrich Schutz;
and late-17th century Italy, including
Archangelo Corelli.
This rare musical group in the
Northwest will use its Chinook Winds
donation to help purchase a much-
needed instrument, a 17th century treble
viol, bow, and case.
Plans for next school year’s Sunday
Concerts by the Sea are already under
way. The WOU Chamber Singers,
Western Rebellion, and an array of
other groups are all eager to display
their talents to the community of music
lovers and those who just want to relax
on a Sunday afternoon.
